MLB: May 2023

Robo umps can’t come soon enough. Nats got screwed on called strikes late in their game against the Mets.

Robo umping should be like pitchcom, so only the ump hears the call. MLB should then encourage them to be far more theatrical, like Enrico Pallazzo.

Cedric Mullins hits for the cycle. Video:

Don Denkinger, who blew an easy call at first in Game 6 of the 1985 World Series, has passed away. Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals, who led the Series 3 games to 2, had a 1-0 lead over the Royals. Jorge Orta grounded to first, and the flip to the pitcher covering was in plenty of time. But Denkinger called him safe, and the Royals went on to score two runs and win the game 2-1. They then blew out the Cards 11-0 in Game 7 for their first World Championship.

I’m reminded of the Fred Snodgrass obit that appeared in the N.Y. Times in 1974.

Fred Snodgrass, 86, Dead
Ball Player Muffed 1912 Fly

Add Carlos Rodón: chronic back problem.

The Astros are already toying with injuries.

They started out the season with Altuve and Brantley injured (though both are slated to return soon) but just among starting pitchers, McCullers and Urquidy are currently in 15 day IL and Luis Garcia’s season is over and needs Tommy John

Could it be? The Yankees showing a bit of heart? Well, except for Hicks anyway. Coming back from 6 down against TB was their second straight gutty win.

On the down side, Rodon looks like the second coming of Don Gullet.

Getting Judge back and Bader has been quite the sparkplug.

Hicks is a bad debt, no way around it.

Did you guys mean to post in the May thread?

Yes, missed the month wording.

I moved the posts over. Seemed best.

Merkel’s obit wasn’t much worse than the Associated Press obit for Denkiner.

Don Denkinger, umpire whose stellar career was overshadowed by blown call, dead at 86

Denkinger admitted he blew the call, which has slightly redeemed him to Cardinal fans.

If you stack the AL East and AL Central on top of each other, they’re in perfect order spots 1 to 10. Every team in the Central is worse than anyone in the East.

The AL East is now 90-43 against teams not in the AL East.

This division ain’t big enough for the five of us.

Actually remarkable.

The N.Y. Times 1956 obit for Fred Merkle (the Snodgrass obit was cited earlier):

FRED MERKLE, 67, BALL PLAYER, DIES;
Giant 1st Baseman’s ‘Boner’ in Failing to Touch 2d Led to Loss of '08 Pennant
Episode Still in Dispute Evers Called Play

The Times obit section was a bit less harsh by 2019:

Bill Buckner, All-Star Shadowed by World Series Error, Dies at 69

Somehow I don’t think Jack Clark will get an obit mentioning his larger role in the Cardinals losing Game 6. And Jorge Orta won’t have his obit mention that he made an out later that inning at 3rd base.

Well, yes, in that he was forced out at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Jim Sundberg. Not exactly his fault.

You mean 3 out 4. LOL

Yeah, I know, but hope springs eternal, etc, etc.
