Mmm... Beer... What's your fave brew?

Sweetwater 420, brewed by the Sweetwater Brewery right here in Atlanta.

Ah, a thread I can relate to. Of course, the problem is that I’ve tried many and liked a few from a number of different places. Still, let’s see…

Australia: VB, Swan Lager, Seven Seas Ale, Matilda Bay Pils (both of the latter from a brewpub in Perth).

UK: John Smith Yorkshire Bitter, M&B Brew XI.

Ireland: Guinness, Harp Lager.

USA: Fat Tire (as previously mentioned), 90 Shilling Ale (Colorado), Anchor Steam (California). Both the Wynkoop Brewpub in Denver and the Capital City Brewpub in Washington DC make damn fine IPAs too.

Canada: Creemore Springs Lager (Ontario), Quidi Vidi 1892 Ale (Newfoundland), Shaftebury Cream Ale (British Columbia), Keith’s IPA (Nova Scotia). Another notable IPA comes from the Steamworks Brewpub in Vancouver.

There must be more, but those are what come first to mind.

Top picks
Grolsch
Heineken
Carlsberg
Abita - Turbo dog

2nd tier
Sam Adams
Shiner Bock
I also like a beer that has a picture of a Monk on the label and you have to shake up the sediment. I don’t know the name of that one.
Beers I don’t like

Guinness - I know most people like it but my taste buds tell me someone has slipped a cigarette butt in it.
Any beer from Mexico
Miller lite -Something in this beer makes me sick
MGD
Fruit beers
Sam Adams (triple malt?) something in a strange blue bottle - It was triple sickening.

Mmm. Beer. Yes.

My faves are Newcastle Brown Ale, Lindemann’s Peche and Framboise, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Brooklyn Lager, and just about any of the Belgian “white” beers. It’s a real shame you can’t get Celis White anymore, which was actually made in Texas.

I like cider too, and am glad to see it catching on. I used to have to make my own if I wanted some. I really like Ace Pear Cider, just wish it was easier to find.

A good beer site: http://www.realbeer.com/

This is a cheat, really, but I love a good Black & Tan.

In bottles, though:
Dixie Blackened Voodoo
Hacker-Schorr (dark)
Newcastle Brown
Bohemia
Negra Modelo

For my rare beer cravings, I lean toward Sam Adams Cream Stout. If unavailable, I’ll order whatever seems closest.

Where to begin?

Let’s see…

  1. Guinness of course but only if its properly poured. My local does it right (marble slab for “shocking” it before handing it over and all that) and has a whole bunch of placques from the Guinness distributors attesting to that fact (“Best poured pint in Ontario, 1997, 1998…”).

  2. Fuller’s Bottle Conditioned Ales

  3. Americans who live near a truly good bar (like the Brickskeller in DC) should try some of the Unibroue beers from Quebec which is (sorta) part of Canada. They weigh in around 8/9% alcohol and are quite good. Fin du Monde, Quelque Chose, and La Maudite are especially yummy.

  4. Forgive me for this one but, 20 years ago, while following the Dead, I discovered Rolling Rock and have had a fondness for it ever since.

Count me in for Yuengling, that’s some good beer.
Besides Guinness (nice every once in a while), there’s this neat beer called Tetley’s Ale, it’s got a Guinness like look and feel but is much lighter in color, it’s a less heavy drink.

One beer that I miss terribly is Albany Amber, had a fantastic nutty, almost warm flavor. They stopped making it around '92 :frowning:

Oh, yes, on preview, I enjoy Rolling Rock from time to time, I can drink a ton of it and not get deathly ill, yeah!

Mats K, Fat Tire is brewed in Fort Collins, CO by a company named New Belgium. This company is so cool that they buy wind power for their plant.

There are quite a few good local breweries here in Fort Collins (and some not-so-good ones as well), we’re some kind of micro-brew refuge. Perhaps the best thing about living in Fort Collins is that we can get Fat Tire in a keg fresh from the brewery, mmmMMMMmmm!

I could go on and on about the virtues of Fat Tire, but I’ll spare you all. If you ever see it though, make sure to pick some up!

I’m from the Pacific Northwest, so there are a lot of beers to choose from. My favorite grocerie store beer is Widmere’s Widberry. I also like Sammy Smith’s Nut Brown Ale, something about the nutty browness of it…

As for Brewhouses, my favorite is here, http://mcmenamins.com/. They have a really good selection and also a really good hard cider.

Ah yes… Fat Tire. A fine training beer before you get to the best, Lefthand Sawtooth. If you like the style of Fat Tire, you’ll love Sawtooth. More complexity, better flavor, a fine Colorado brew.

All this talk about beer has convinced me to hit the liquor store, so I’ll pick up some Sawtooth and give it a try. I can’t imagine it’s better than Fat Tire, however.

Well I am a Guinness man. And of course it should be poured properly, but I must say that even a "pour"ly poured Guinness is just about better then anything. I am partial to Bass Ale of course, but do not care for Black and Tan’s at all.

One beer I adore but cannot seem to find anywhere is Redhook’s Double Black. I first tried it when I toured their brewery and it does not have a wide distribution, apparently.

Guinness is still a favorite, but I’m learning that it’s my friend only up to a point. Two, three pints at the most and I’m fine. Any more than that and I’m unpleasantly wrecked for the next 24 hours.

I’m partial to reds, porters, and stouts myself, but the occasional nut brown is also welcome. I like Sam Smith’s just fine, especially the Tadcaster Porter and the Oatmeal Stout. But the Blue Moon Belgian White will do nicely in a pinch!

Finally, there’s a place on U Street and 12th here in DC called the Saloon. They moved from Georgetown a couple of years ago and they sell God’s own beer there - Urbock 23. Its a Czech brew, IIRC, and it’s the finest barley wine I’ve ever had the pleasure of knocking back. Should you happen across a pub that sells it, I strongly recommend doing whatever it is you feel possible to scrape up the bucks for a glass.

Earth:
Douglas Scotch Ale
Chimay Grande Reserve (mentioned above)

Quebec:
Boreale Cuivree
(I find Unibroue products overrated)

Homebrew:
Cooper’s Pale Ale with secret additions

These pretzels are making me thirsty…

If I’m going cheap, Budweiser will do it for me. I also usually start with Bud to get the flavor in. My favorite is J.W.Dundee Honey Brown lager. I’m also particular to Anchor Porter and, as previously mentioned, Young’s Oatmeal Stout. I also like Newcastle Brown Ale, and Killian’s Irish Red.

[li] Guinness[/li] Miller Lite

Sprecher Black Bavarian. Never seen it outside of WI, which sucks, because I live in California. Darn UPS to heck for not shipping beer, too. 4 pack has to last until I go home for Christmas. If you happen to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison, it’s on tap (along with 20-some other microbrews) in the student union.

Guiness is ok in a pinch, but again, it has to be poured properly.

My “favorite” mass-produced, always available brew is probably MGD.

-Lord Vor

ARROGANT BASTARD ALE (you’re not worthy)

but in a pinch, I prefer black & tans (Guiness & BASS)

Third vote for: Modelo Negro (my favorite and please no lime).
Excellent second choices: Dos XX, Mahou *****, Estrella Damm, Cruzcampo
