Mmmm, dessert! Ewww, raspberry!

I’m not a very picky eater – until it comes to dessert. For whatever reason, I’ve cultivated fairly strong flavor likes and dislikes when it comes to after-dinner treats:

Yay!
lemon
lime
cinnamon
caramel
mint
butterscotch
vanilla
baked cherry
(not all mixed together, of course)

Nay!
raspberry
coconut
pineapple
cream cheese
banana
coffee
cooked nuts
baked apple

Strangely enough, I can take or leave chocolate. It’s good, but I don’t crave it, and something like German Chocolate Cake is nixed because of the coconut.

And these flavor preferences hold true regardless of format – I like chocolate cake, but I don’t like the ones with raspberry ribbons in them. Walnuts or pistachios are equally distasteful in ice cream or muffins. And I’ve never met a cheesecake I cared for, thanks to the cream cheese flavor.

What flavors do you like or dislike in your sweets? Does anyone else have quite as polarizing a list, or am I just picky, picky, picky?

I’m not especially fond of the combination of fruit and chocolate, although I like either one alone. Fruit and coffee is right out. Blech.

No raspberry, no coffee…

I’m sorry, but your opinion is wrong.
(just kidding…kinda)

I like raspberry

Coconut and other nuts are yuk, though.

Pepermint is ok in small doses, but I prefer spearment or wintergreen.

I’ll usually pass on marshmallow.

You’re probably right. I’m amazed at how many things come with raspberry in 'em – chocolate cake, for one. And whenever I go to Jamba Juice I substitute lime sherbet for raspberry sherbet in any smoothie I order.

Chocolate ice cream is disgusting. In fact, it’s one of the very few foods that I actively dislike.

However, anything with nuts I will go crazy for (especially halva), ditto anything rose-flavored (like Rooh-Afza, semolina cake, or gulab jamun). And I have durian milkshakes every chance I get.

Oh, I love chocolate and raspberry together.
Anything chocolate would be my preference for dessert.

I like most of the things on your “dislike” list, but then again, I like desserts.
I’m not real wild about cinnamon. It depends on how it’s used. I like cinnamon Altoids, but that’s not really dessert, is it?
I love a good Apple Crisp, with oatmeal and cinnamon.

I really hate peaches, so Peach Melba would be right out.
Anything else that’s fruity, like apple pie or Key Lime pie (yum!) would be better in the spring or summer.

I love cheesecake.

My mom makes a dessert for Christmas that’s peppermint ice cream, mixed with chocolate syrup (the really thick stuff, not Hershey’s). You let the ice cream get slightly soft, and fold in the syrup, and freeze it in a pie shell. Then you serve it in slices. Around here, you can only get peppermint ice cream in the winter, so it’s always a treat.

I’ll take everything you don’t want!!

Pineapple, coconut and cream cheese…yum!

I love raspberries, plain or in chocolate, orange in chocolate! Orange peel dipped in semi-sweet chocolate…yum!
Oddly enough, I don’t particularly like 1. fruit or 2. sweets. They have to be cunningly, suavely disguised in creamy or suitably non-sweet stuff.
Or springerles–dry anise cookies–suitable for munching with wine or coffee. Delish!
The only way I like fruit is fresh-as-it-grows: ripe mango, coconut, pineapple, any berry you can name. I’ve never grasped apples.
And leave out the cinnamon. I don’t even like it on pastries. It’s one of the few tastes and smells that repel me.

Otherwise omnivorous,
Veb

I hate sweet chocolate. Don’t get me wronk, chocolate is fine, but when it’s more sugar than cocoa, count me out. Anything really sweet I really don’t like. everything else is great though.

No coconut cream pie? No banana pudding? No apple pie? No CHEESECAKE?! Are you MAD?!?!?

Raspberries. dies

My Aunt Dianne makes raspberry preserves that will cure the sick and raise the dead. They are AMAZING.

Besides the fact that I love raspberries under just about any circumstances… I start to sound like the Cheese Guy. (Canadians will know what I’m talking about.) “Raspberry tart, raspberry mousse, raspberry sorbet, chocolate-raspberry cake, raspberry cheesecake, raspberry coulis…”

Listen, if you don’t like them… more for me.

Love rasberry
Love chocolate - all time best dessert flavor
Don’t really like the 2 together though; they kind of cancel each other out.

vanilla, caramel, cinnamon & apple, strawberry, banana - all good flavors

custard = excellent

love coconut cream pie

love banana cream pie

Hate lemon anything for dessert. IMO lemon should be what you add to make things tart. When it’s sweetened, it’s yucky. Same goes for lime.

Pineapple sucks.

Watermelon sucks.

I could take or leave cheesecake - seems like an awful waste of all that fat and sugar for something that doesn’t taste all that great.

Cooked nuts? WTF? I don’t like walnuts in stuff because the skin on them is bitter and it ruins the flavor of whatever it’s in. I don’t like hazelnuts or brazilnuts either.

And who invented mariscino (sp?) cherries? They taste like ass.

I want to know who started all this Raspberry in Everything fad…

Bleccccch!!!

Nope.

Ghastly stuff.

Tolerable in a pinch.

No thanks.

No. Actually, it’s kind of handy. I could already stand to lose a few pounds, so not liking a bunch of popular desserts makes it easy to avoid dessert altogether. “Cheesecake? No, thank you.”

I actually like raspberries okay if they’re fresh. Like off-the-bush fresh. But not mixed with anything. (Oddly, I like cooked blackberries or boysenberries fine. Something about raspberries, though…)

Pineapple and coconut, though, are nasty in their natural state or prepared in an ostensibly tasty dish.

You’ll find this odd, Interrobang!?, but I will only eat apples if they’re cooked. Can’t stand 'em raw (green peppers, on the other hand, must be raw, as cooked they are positively repugnant.)

I do not like flaked coconut, but fresh is a whole different thing. Personally, I think the most ghastly dessert combos are that horrible Hawaiian salad (with marshmallows, pineapple, coconut, maraschino cherries and gawd only knows what else) and jello with suspended anything in it. Plain jello is OK though.

And raspberries? HEAVEN!

Jello of any kind, however, is loathsome.

I concur.

I hate fruit and chocolate mixed. Fruit belongs in the fruit bowl and not the candy dish.

This double-triple-quadruple chocolate fad makes me ill.

And I cannot eat shellfish in anything. I don’t understand anyone who can eat it.

I retch at the site of a anyone eating ice cream with a wooden paddle. I cannot stand to see them use it. I will get them a plastic spoon. When I saw the newsclip of the doctor using a tongue depressor on Saddam, I gagged.

I like every single thing mentioned in this thread so far, and probably lots more.

Although I don’t tend to think of shellfish as a dessert.
