MmmMMmmm.... Tom and Jerries and other Holiday Good Eats

After reading recomendations on another thread for warm winter drinks (no, I’m not going to go look up the thread. I’m way too lazy), this weekend we experimented with Tom and Jerries (Tom and Jerrys?) and I figured it was more than time to come back here and proclaim them my New Favorite Drink.

For those of you who missed the thread, my recipe for a Tom and Jerry is as follows. Actually, it makes 2 Tom and Jerries, since 1 egg = 2 drinks.

1 egg
2 T. Sugar
1 shot dark Rum
1 shot brandy
~ 3/4 cup of warm milk, depending on size of glass
Nutmeg
Cinnamon (if you’re Mr. Athena. I think that cinnamon is best left to buns and toast.)

Separate egg. Beat egg white in electric mixer until stiff, adding 1 T. sugar in the process. Meanwhile, whisk egg yolk and remaining 1 T. sugar together in a spouted measuring cup or bowl.

When egg white forms stiff peaks, add them to yolk/sugar mixture and fold together. Add liquors, whisk together.

Pour 1/2 this mixture into a mug. Fill mug with hot milk. Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon, if desired.

Yummmm… like egg nog, but without the cloying thickness. I actually dislike Egg Nog, but I try it every year, always thinking that it should taste like a Tom and Jerry tastes. The beaten egg makes this drink light and airy, and it’s smooth and lovely. Damn, I want one right now.

Now, on to other holiday foods. I recently received a real Country Ham from Gatton Farms (www.fatherscountryhams.com/about.html). Highly recommended. There’s nothing like a salty, almost cheese-like country ham. We received it last night and sat around eating slices right from the package.

So what are you all eating in preparations for the Holiday Weight Gain?

My mama is preparing the traditional. Along with, speaking of ham, a ham that’s been hanging in her smoke house since 1993. It’s no good if you eat them within 7 years.

Oh man, it’s like eating a big block of salt and cheesy fat, but dang is it ever good.

Also, we’ll be breaking out the “Crissies”, which are kind of like a hot white russian(The drink that is), but really totally different, but that’s the only thing I can equate them to.

We always gulp down large quantities of Mom’s Irish Cream recipie:
[li]1 can sweetened condensed milk[/li][li]2 cups half-and-half ( so this isn’t easy on the arteries)[/li][li]2 cups 80 proof canadian whiskey[/li][li]1 heaping teaspoon instant coffee powder[/li][li]2 oz. coffee liquer ( spelling that wrong, I know… we use her homemade Kahluha)[/li]
combine and chug… I mean sip delicately from a large mug…I mean tiny demitasse cup.
Heckuva lot cheaper than Bailey’s…
