I’ve been up for a while reading the paper, having soup for breakfast (dunno - it sounded good), putting away the second load of dishes. Adding to my amazon wishlist because they have a picture of Jane Smiley in bathtub covered with books because of this book that came out recently. (it’s actually an article about book jacket pictures). Which reminded me that I was curious about that book. And also that I’d meant to add this book, which scout recommended a few MMPs back (and which Lissla had originally recommended), which reminded me that I’d meant to look for… You know how it goes. Wound up spending quite a while (but no money) on amazon. I’ll look for the books at the library first and then buy them if they’re something I think I’ll reread more than once or just ought to own.
Thought of Taters when I heard the news this morning. Sounds like you’re having major weather out there. Hope you have power and are OK. They mentioned that some people might need to make alternate plans to watch the Seahawks.
Glad to hear the kid is installed in her new apartment, FCM. I think I’m somewhere between Lissla and eleanor, so why don’t you stop by and get me while your in the neighborhood?
It’s really appropriate that they were just talking and singing about procrastination on the radio cuz that’s just what I’m doing…
Off to try to get something done… need to get some Valentines done and out the door…
Whoever said it upthread, I also want to read that book about what’s for dinner around the world. They were interviewed on NPR awhile back–sounds interesting.
And, just so you all don’t think I’m crazy–I was singing the lyrics to the Mary Tyler Moor Show theme song in my last post…
I am much more Rhoda than Mary, any way (except for the Brooklyn Jew part).
Good morning, everybody. We’ve had breakfast and I started a load of clothes. That’s as productive as I’ve gotten so far.
Soon I will take a shower and go to the grocery store to get vittles for the rest of the week. I started to make rib rub last night, but we were out of two spices. So I’m going early for a change. Shake things up a bit, you know?
I need a life.
Oh yeah! We had an absolutely yummy dinner last night. Pork chop parmesan and bowtie pasta with pesto, and fresh baked bread. At the store they sell these loaves of bread that need more baking - 15 minutes and you have fresh baked bread! Mmm.
We weathered the storm with no damage and no loss of power. There were a few branches in our backyard from the neighbor’s fir tree, but that’s about all. There were plenty of people that suffered loss of power, downed trees and flooding. We were extremely lucky.
Okay Sean, I have to get one final dig in before today’s game:
GO SEAHAWKS! They are going to kick some Steeler pansy-ass and take names! Woo-hoo!
Alright, I’ll leave you alone now.
I was up at six and put and pork butt (who knew it’s really pork shoulder) in the crock pot. I’m making pulled pork sandwiches for today’s festivities. I even went and got the fixings for cole slaw to put on top for those people that are so inclined.
I’ve already washed the dishes, but need to finish cleaning the counters. Then I’ll need to dust, vaccuum and wash the floors. Plus, scrub the powder room. Upstairs will be off limits. I don’t feel like worrying about that too.
FCM, you could swing by and get me too and we could turn it in to an all girl MMP Road Trip. I mean, I only live about 2900 miles away from you. You could handle that!
Hungry Planet is very good, but it’s pricey. As I said, it’s a coffee-table book. Beautiful pictures, interesting articles, but about $50 Canadian.
Today there will be nothing to do at work, and it will be boring. No one will come in because it’s snowing/sleeting, and I can’t stand any more cleaning and alphabetizing the shelves. And I have to be there for eight hours tomorrow. I’m looking forward to a) Attacks Husband’s coming back, because we can chat and it will make everything more interesting, and b) next weekend, which I’m taking off.
Right now I am listening to the wonderful sound of my husband doing chores. I plan to loll in idleness until work. I’m still sleepy. Actually, I’ll see if we need any groceries. After Mr. Lissar does the dishes I’m going to root through the big freezer and see what inventive meals I can make.
I’m just about done with Stephen King’s Cell. I read most of it yesterday between errands and such. I think I’ve got about 50 pages left. It was a good, light read. Actually, out of all his books, I think I enjoyed The Stand the most. I liked Stand By Me a lot too. I’ve got a huuuuuuge tome on the history of Europe on my nightstand. It starts out way before human kind and works it’s way to, mmm, I think the Cold War era. It’s a bit of a slog; lots of footnotes, etc., but it is interesting. That’s for reading when I can concentrate with no interruptions.
I’m giving myself until 8:30 then I need to get back to tidying up. I wish I could just blink my eyes like a genie and it would all be done.
I WAS going to make beer soup today–it’s cold out and snowy (sort of-Mopther Nature is an underachiever this year), but…
I found out that one cannot purchase alcohol before noon on Sunday in my town.
WTH?
I buy beer maybe once a year (hey! Where y’all going? I’m alot of fun, really I am!)
Grrrr. Now I’ll hafta make the soup w/o the beer. It’ll be plain ole cheese soup–not the same at all.
Also forgot my cash, so went into Target for no reason (went in to buy a lamp for the computer desk–found a nice one, too. But, I don’t want to rack it up on the credit card.)
Maybe I’ll go back to doing nothing. That seems to work better!
Ah-the debit card. Perhaps if I were single, this would be good. The two of us, both using debit cards all day=financial chaos (for us).
I also don’t have an ATM card–because eleanorigby considers the machines that give you money to be from a fairyland place where the amount taken out has no relation to the amount in the account or even to the other bills that are electronically deducted from the same account. This persistent belief in magical money machines has taught me well. I can handle the truth, but not an ATM card.
I do best with cold, hard cash or checks. However, today I have about $80 sitting on my dresser. Did I take that with me to Target? No, I did not. So, I found a nice lamp and thought for a moment and then checked my wallet–$5 and change.
<sigh>
So, I am going back this afternoon(with the cash)–and then I am doing nothing at all. Not even laundry.
Borrowed a can of beer from my neighbor and so had delicious beer soup for lunch!
Beer Cheese Soup? Could anything be better? I absolutely love the stuff. I’ve tried to make it myself a couple times and failed miseribly.
eleanorigby could you pack a thermos or two of it to take on FCM’s Grand USA tour? I have an Etch-a-sketch and I’ll let you use it. I’ll be on the I-90/94 West ramp off of Minnesota Hwy. 16. I’ll be the one waving chocolates.
Oh sure, why not? I can make a big circle and pick up everybody!! Just wait by the curb with your bag - I’ll be in the green Aerostar. I like to get an early start, so I won’t wait if you’re not there…
We just finished cutting down most of the two overgrown cedars that blocked our view as we exit our driveway. I’ve hated them since we moved in here. Once we rake out the area and take the stumps down as far as we can, I’ll be planting some crape myrtles and azaleas, and some flowers, since it’s a sunny spot. Meanwhile, that end of the yard looks nekkid from the house.
The larger pieces of cedar will be firewood, and the smaller stuff will be chipped into mulch - I’ll get my mulcher out in the spring and spend a day or two feeding branches into it. Woohoo!
Glad to hear everything’s OK, Taters. What team was that you’re rooting for again? It was hard to tell.
Glad to hear it’ll be a coast to coast and back again tour. I’ve never been west of St. Louis, so I figure picking Taters up will be both educational and fun. Beer and cheese soup sounds yummy. What should I bring? I’ll be the one on I-70. Maybe I’ll wear my gardening hat to promote easy identification.
I just finished a rousing lunch of banana, strawberries and blueberries with peach yogurt. I’m going to visit friends for dinner, so I wanted something pretty light. Also, I’m REALLY trying to use up everything I have on hand.
Went to Wild Oats after church and came home with a little bit more than I meant to, but now I can do a stir-fry with the odd conglomeration of veggies in the fridge and also a variation on hot-and-sour soup. Should be exciting. Of course, I still have the turkey soup from yesterday, which turned out yum.
Need to get the last load of laundry into the washer and the rest of the laundry put away. Then maybe I’lll plan food for the week and work on Valentines. Oh and I need to call my brother. That’ll easily get me to 4:30 when I need to leave for my friends’ house…
I have much less stuff in my freezer than I thought I did. The Not Buying Food week might not work, unless we want a steady diet of stir-fried chicken and strawberries with bacon, and peanut butter sandwiches.
Attacks Husband just got me a five pound hunk of pig. It was on sale for $.99 a pound. We can have pork with strawberries, too. Awesome. And canned soup.
Maybe I should food shop on Tuesday. What time would you be picking me up? And could I have the beer cheese soup recipe?
6 thin-cut (breakfast) boneless pork chops, trimmed of fat
1 cup panko (Japanese) bread crumbs
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 cup flour, for dredging
3 eggs, beaten
Vegetable oil, for frying (1/4 inch deep in the pan)
1/2 26 oz jar marinara sauce
2/3 cup shredded mozzarella
1/4 cup grated parmesan
Preheat oven to 400°
Mix together the breadcrumbs with the seasonings. In another bowl place the flour. In a third bowl have the beaten eggs. Dredge a pork chop in the flour, dip in egg, and then the breadcrumbs. Press down to coat well. Shake off excess. Fry in the 400° oil about 3 minutes per side, until lightly browned. Drain on paper towels.
Place half the marinara (I warmed it in a pot before this step) in the bottom of a baking dish. Lay the pork chops in a single layer, and cover with the other half of marinara. Sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan over all. Bake until sauce is bubbly and cheese begins to brown, about 20-25 minutes.
Serve with pasta tossed with pesto. (I used jarred pesto, and it was awesome!)
OK - your turn to share a recipe! We want beer cheese soup!
Hey y’all! Just thought I’d pop in. I’ll catch everybody up on the excitement that is my life in tomorrow’s MMP. Hope everyone’s had a good weekend. It was a good one here. Little bit of house cleaning and eating bbq pretty much sums up yesterday and today. See y’all tomorrow!
1 cup milked, heated.
1 can chicken broth
1 stick butter, melted
1/2 cup flour
8 oz sharp cheddar cheese
1 can beer–I use 1/2 can
Optional ingredients: 1/2 cup celery diced, 1/4 cup green onions sauted in the butter, 1 cup cooked broccoli, 8 oz mild pork sausage(previously sauted and drained)–I add a bit of garlic and the onion.
In a Dutch oven(or heavy, deep pot), melt butter; saute onion or celery now (if desired) until soft. Add flour and stir until dissolved. cook bently allowing it to bubble, stirring constantly. Add heated milk and broth and whisk over low heat until smooth. Add cheese and either sausage or broccoli now. Stir and bring to slow boil. Turn off heat, add beer and stir well. Reheat over low heat and serve.
This is very rich and very good with Italian or French bread and a salad. It is very filling.
Wow, both recipes sound yummy! Might have to make one or the other later this week. I’m back from dinner. My friend’s husband was the only one who had any interest in the game, so he’s recording it to watch later.
Welcome back, swampy!
I need to fold laundry so that that task, at least is done today. Little brother will be here Tuesday night, so the house needs to look semi-civilized before then. So, I’m going to pop a DVD in the computer and watch a movie while folding laundry in the bedroom.
So does anyone wonder whether there’s another message board in the universe where two of the top three threads are about the Superbowl (game & ads) and the third is about Betty Friedan?
