Modern Family 1/5/2011

I am starting to feel that the show is starting to run out of steam; it just hasn’t seemed as sharp as it was during the first season…

There are still some funny bits here and there (I really liked Manny bragging that his training wheels had to be custom made) but I hope they can get back to being an entertaining show from start to finish, not just having a couple of funny one-liners sprinkled into each episode.

Finally, I will gladly assert to anyone listening that Jami Gertz is easily 10x hotter than Sophia Vergara.

It shouldn’t stay upright.
Neither should you.

I’m weary of every Modern Family thread having the obligatory “it’s not as good as it used to be” analysis that runs rampant in The Office threads.

To quote John Travolta, it wasn’t that good before and it’s not that bad now. (His description of himself during the Look Who’s Talking phase of his career.)

And I’ll gladly disagree, but it’s sort of like arguing over which huge pile of money I’d like to win.

I thought the show was as good as ever, but I was annoyed that the promos spoiled the really funny moments, as promos tend to do. And I love Luke’s teaching methodology.

Claire’s insanity over the speeder was a cause of great amusement in our house - lets just say my wife has been known to grab onto something inconsequential and beat it to death.

You could coat Jami Gertz in thermite, ignite her, then push her into an erupting volcano, and you’d still be wrong.

Where was Ariel Winter (the actress who plays Alex)?

Ditto. Not that I’d kick her out of bed for eating crackers, but it really isn’t a contest.

Ed O’Neill had the funniest bits in this episode, followed by the little kid. The gay couple’s story was flat and unfunny, plus they seem to have forgotten that Cameron used to play O-line for a top NCAA team. There is muscle under the bulk. The vagrant would have found out the hard way.

I still love it, and I think Jami Gertz looks like an average woman you’d see in a grocery store.

He was fighting in confined quarters though.

Stephen Hawking could ride that bike.

Sorry, but you’re off by a factor of 20.

Exactly because I knew that many feel this way, I almost didn’t start this thread (I also get sick of people complaining that X is no longer any good, or that Y used to be SO MUCH better back when I was the only one cool enough to know about it.) but in this case it is my honest opinion that the recent Modern Family episodes are not as enjoyable (at least to me) as the bulk of the first season’s episodes were.

(I threw my little Jami Gertz observation in there just for fun, but I am actually serious about that as well. To me, Jami is much more attractive than Sophia is. I also think that Julie Bowen is more attractive than Sophia is.)

Oh, and Ellis Dee, I agree that even at it’s best Modern Family is not great, groundbreaking television, just a good show that featured much better than average writing, and a nice supply of witty lines each episode…

I’m sorry but I will not entertain any idea that this show is going stale in the least! Every episode I rave about how much I love the show. The writing and the characters are so awesome.

I was crying dying laughing when Jay was teaching Gloria to ride that bike… “eh-slowly!!” and her ringing the bell! SO FUNNY! And then when Claire stole her bike and muttered, "laces, mirror, bell’- hysterical! I love love LOVE that show.

On the off chance the you missed the other joke in that scene (my sister did). Claire didn’t steal her bike. She grabbed Gloria.

And I just caught the other other joke. I thought the laces/mirror/bell thing was just tossed in to be funny. It’s because Gloria and Claire were both taught how to ride a bike by the same person. :smack:

I didnt miss either, it was too great!

I just now realized that by being grabbed (by Claire) while riding a bike, Gloria’s deepest, darkest fears about cycling came true…:stuck_out_tongue:

(I also really liked the “laces, mirror, bell” bit, knowing that Jay’s method has remained constant over 30 years)

I thought this was a fantastic episode with the reappearance of the dollhouse which was a throwaway prop when it first appeared but has been used several times now. And the explanation about why Luke had free time as well as the greatest “Luke, I am your father” line ever!

The whole “could care less,” “head is literally going to explode” scene was hilarious.

Love this show, wish it wasn’t in the middle of several inferior shows in ABC’s Wed. night line up.

I thought it was great. Probably the best of the season. I was giggling my ass off all alone.

I don’t bother with the 8 O’Clock shows but Cougar Town is at least as funny as Modern Family. It got much better over time so it you tried it early on and didn’t like it, give it another shot.
