Modern Family 2/29 Leap Day

Better yet, get the old Lilly back. I hate to say this, because she’s a child, but I find new Lilly hard to look at. She’s not ugly, but baby Lilly was so damn cute. I wonder why they didn’t keep the old Lilly actress/es.

In the credits those characters were listed as being named Mickey and Davy.
I liked Luke’s line about poop and something getting married and having the ceremony in his nose. I wish I could remember the other thing. :smack:

Menstruation humor is just lame. The humor on this show is usually so much smarter. This could have been an episode of any random sitcom.

“You’re still that sexy 8 year old I fell in love with…”
“He means…”
“No, just let it go…”
Wasn’t one of my favorites either, and I’ll admit the ‘three elaborate parties’ bothered me. The Wizard of Oz alone would be several thousand easy, and the answer was so simple: cancel the tornado part and keep everything else.

Also, Cam has been way too drama queen without any redeeming qualities lately. He’s been overly dramatic since the first episode and that’s fine but you need some balance once in a while like the Cam who when he thought he heard an intruder in Lily’s room went from sleepyhead to up-and-armed-and-mobile in 1.75 seconds. You need to remember why Mitchell ever fell in love with/wanted to have a child with him.

Though that said, “I’m cancelling our baby” in the flashback was funny.

The only time I’ve seen a sitcom deal with PMS, and make it really funny, was in Everybody Loves Raymond. It’s arguably my favorite episode of that show.

And:

“You’re still that sexy 8 year old I fell in love with…” followed by the woman shooing her kid away from him.

I think it was poop and puke. Leading to Manny’s response, “You paint pictures with words.”

Ah that was it, thanks.

It was a combination of the original Lily really not liking anything to do with being on the set and the new one being old enough to deliver some lines (and enjoying herself).

I just saw the cold open for the Season 2 episode “Dance Dance Revelation” and witnesses this hilarious exchange:

PHIL is hunched over the kitchen counter messing around with something. He ignores the ringing telephone, which is right next to him.

CLAIRE enters, burdened by a box of party decorations.

CLAIRE: Okay, I’ll … I’ll get that. (On the phone) Hello?

JAY (on the phone, with Manny standing next to him): Hey, Manny’s getting his outfit together for the dance tonight …

CLAIRE: I was just taking some supplies out to the car. Isn’t this exciting? The boys’ first dance?

JAY: Greatest day of my life. Does Phil have a green pocket-square for him?

MANNY: Teal!

JAY: Teaaall?

CLAIRE: I don’t know. I don’t think Phil’s really a pocket-square kind of a guy.

PHIL: (Offended) Wow!

CLAIRE turns to give Phil a look. Phil changes his expression.

PHIL: (Subdued) Wow.

CLAIRE (On the phone): Why don’t we conference in Mitch?

GLORIA: Ay, look! This might work! (Hands Manny some fabric)

MANNY: Well … except that it’s turquoise … oh … and a bra?

GLORIA: Do you think the kids in my village have pocket-squares?

MANNY: Here we go with the village.

CLAIRE (On the phone): Dad, are you still there?

JAY: Unfortunately, yes.

GLORIA: Ay, please ask Claire what time do I need to be at the school to help set up?

JAY (On the phone): Gloria wants to know …

CLAIRE: No, I heard, I heard. Umm … Tell her thank you so much but we have all the help we could possibly need and she doesn’t even have to come tonight if she doesn’t want to.

JAY: Claire said …

GLORIA: I heard.

MITCHELL is at a playground and picks up his phone as it rings.

MITCHELL: Hello?

CLAIRE: Oh, hey, Mitch! Where are you?

MITCHELL: Oh, we’re at the park. You would not believe how some of these people dress their kids. Lily’s friend just pulled a Britney Spears getting out of a sandbox car.

CLAIRE: So, dad’s on the line …

JAY: Do you have a teal pocket square for Manny?

MITCHELL (Calling across the playground): Cam, Manny needs a teal pocket square.

CAM: Oh, I’ve got teal, I’ve got aqua, I’ve got sea foam …

MITCHELL: Yeah, Cam’s got one.

JAY (to Manny): Cam’s got one.

MANNY: Yes!

CAM: Oh, you know what? I lent it to André.

MITCHELL: Ahp. He lent it to André.

JAY (To Manny): Flag on the play.

MANNY (Panicking): What’s that mean? What’s that mean!?

JAY gives the thumbs down to MANNY, who hangs his head and stalks around in a circle.

JAY: Now, I gotta go to the mall.

LUKE walks into the Dunphys’ kitchen wearing trousers and a suit jacket over his T-shirt. The sleeves and pant cuffs are about six inches too short.

LUKE: Is this okay?

CLAIRE: Oh, hey! Luke has to go to the mall too.

LUKE (shrugging): What?

CLAIRE: Phil …

PHIL: Let’s go, Incredible Hulk.

The problem I had with this episode was that Leap Day sure felt like it was on a weekend rather than the middle of the week. Manny apparently spent the night at the Dunphys, none of the kids looked like they were headed off to school, none of the adults went to work…

I nearly fell out of my chair when Luke was revealed with the fake blood, but otherwise — yeah — not such a great episode. I’ve never understood why this “PMS turns women into monsters” thing has been so popular in sitcoms; it’s never seemed to be a problem in, you know, real life.

And … seriously? Wizard of Oz? I’ll admit having had few deep chats with gay folks about cinema, but that strikes me as a bit (um) insultingly cliché. Cam was funnier and more likable when he had macho as well as dramatic moments.

Judy Garland (and Liza Minelli) is very popular in the gay community. OTOH, it’s also entirely possibly that Cam just really likes The Wizard of Oz and Mitchell was really grasping at straws to come up with ideas for a party.

I know. Pretty eerie…

the writers seem to have completely forgotten that he was the starting C for the fighting illini (how he slipped through mizzou’s fingers, we’ll never know).

Every smart boy, even a Missouri native, knows that Illinois is a much better school.

One of my favorite Cam-Mitchell moments is, I think, from the first season. They are speaking to the camera:

(from memory)

Mitchell: My father never took me to a sports game.

Cam: That’s because you say things like “sports game.” It’s a “game.”

This was possibly the worst episode of Modern Family I’ve ever seen. The only characters I didn’t find irritating during the whole episode were Cam and Jay. I especially wanted Cam to just tell Cam to shut the hell up and act like an adult.

Phil said something about taking the day off, keeping the kids home, etc.

Doesn’t really explain why Jay and Gloria were okay with Manny taking the day off too, but it’s easy to extrapolate that they were letting him participate as well.

As for Mitchell, easy to assume he took a personal day to deal with preparing Cam’s party. Afterall, he only turns 10 once.

Am I the only one who was expecting Jay at some point to come out wearing a suit of many hooks?
