Modern Family 2/29 Leap Day

Mitchell “Everybody follow the Birthday Flag.”
Cam “What did you call me? Oh.”

Luke “They’re monsterating!”

I just knew Luke would go overboard with the fake blood, but even I was pleasantly surprised with just how bad it was.

“We named Lily after a pig?”

I thought that was one of the worst episodes ever. It felt like it was written by a completely different writer then usual! Hahaha women are horrible emotional beasts when they menstruate, isn’t that hilarious!?

Yes.

My favorite oddly timed joke:
“Hey”
“Hey”
“We’re the monkeys.”

I didn’t think that was plausible, because I can’t imagine that he would really think even for a moment that his own partner/husband would call him a fag.

That was just the setup. Phil’s reaction & attempts to handle the situation were hilarious.

Bonus points for Bender captaining the pink boat.

That was my favorite moment of the episode, which overall I thought was very weak.

And, Leap Day is a thing now? 30 Rock invented a whole set of traditions. Parks and Recreation made Leap Day Jerry Gergich’s birthday. And now Phil is crazy about Leap Day and it’s also Cam’s birthday.

And now that we’ve established this as a theme for Modern Family threads – here’s another situation in which the characters are filthy rich. Mitchell planned and scrapped … what? three? … elaborate parties?

I am surprised over the negative reactions…I thought it was a great episode.

I think they were maybe a little TOO overt with Claire knowing what was going on with Phil’s menstr-itis, I was expecting more subtlety. Overall I thought it was very funny and much better than last week.

I much preferred last week’s episode. The Haley-Phil dynamic was very nice. The Luke-Manny thing was good.

This week was annoying. I don’t like it when this degree of selfishness and self-absorbtion is portrayed as being something cute.

Actually, I just remembered that The Middle this week also had a character with a Feb. 29 birthday. This time it was a teen-ager, who, like Cam, also had unrealistic expectations, but, unlike Cam, was much more mature about the outcome. I just really hated Cam for being such a jerk and Mitchell for indulging him so extravagantly.

I also didn’t like the Gloria-wanting-Jay-to-fight-for-her plot. It made me really dislike her as well.

The monstruation thing was meh. And it really made me dislike Claire (again).

And Phil’s weirdness about the “extra day” made me dislike him too.

I just didn’t find any of it funny, just ridiculous.

Oh, the other line I liked:

Gloria: Nobody … Call him grandpa!
Luke: I do.

“You said you were going to your parents.”
“You’re smothering me!”

I had no idea that was Bender as the boat captain until I saw his name in the end credits, then I had to rewind and watch his scenes again. Still had trouble hearing his Bender voice.

Haha me too! I did that exact same thing.

I’ve seen enough behind the scenes stuff that he changes his voice for Bender, although his voice sounded fake anyway…like he was doing a “real person” voice

I quite liked this episode. Lots of great lines, none of the plots annoyed me, etc. They really need to decide what to do with Lily, though: either keep her a mute (like the old Lily) or give her more lines than just parroting someone.

You have your period right now, don’t you.

(I am a woman I was kidding please don’t hurt me)

Sometimes there is zero connection between what you can imagine someone saying and what you think – just for a second – that you heard. I totally bought it, and thought it was a great joke.

But she didn’t want him to fight for her: she thought she did, but then she realized that she was glad she married a grownup.

All you did was resolve the plotline when what I said was that I didn’t like the premise. The fact that she changed her mind doesn’t change the fact that I found her dislikable until then.

As usual I wish they could make the gay couple a little less overly dramatic. Cam is just annoyingly shrill and completely unlikeable to me and it only gets worse every episode.

I love everything else about this show, but I didn’t really care for this episode. They took it too far with Gloria hitting the man.

Yeah. I hate to be a downer, but I didn’t care for this episode. I really don’t care for menstruation humor. Jokes about a woman’s period are too easy, and almost always unfunny. The ones that revolve around the “fact” that women’s cycles are often the worst.

I thought the Leap Day humor was fun. (As I did with the other shows that played with it.)

…that women’s cycles *synchronize * are often the worst?

That mis-fact didn’t bother me - it was more about the father and son’s fear.

I’d never seen the show before and I thought it was funny. Maybe it’s usually set in a different reality than what I saw.

Oops. Sorry, yes, missed an important word there. Thanks, for catching that, bup.

Oh, bup, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t my favorite episode of Modern Family, because I don’t care for that particular vein of humor. But, there were other funny things in there, and if you liked this one, I think you will like the show in general.,

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard it. My wife missed it at first (she was sewing at the time so she has an excuse) and I had to back it up for her.

Coming on the day of Davey Jones’ death. What are the odds?
