Modern Family - 3/27

I thought this was a pretty funny episode.

“Lesbians!”

“We got a letter.”

“You’re NEVER off the court.”

It bugged me that Phil didn’t hold down the pilot button when he hit the ignitor. He held it down for a few seconds, but as soon as he let it go, I thought to myself “that’s not right, it’s not gonna light like that”.
But I guess it makes sense from a “Phil doesn’t know how to do stuff around the house” viewpoint. He’s always had his dad or Jay to fix that kind of stuff. OTOH, one would be wise to read the directions that are printed right there before dismantling the unit.

I thought the ep was moderately funny. The only real laugh for me was: the goldfish.

And I’ve said this before, but I really don’t like any of the kids on this show.

Not the best episode ever, a little flatter than usual. But two big belly-laughs from me:

“Photosynthesis?”

and the whole tag…

(SLAP) “YOU’RE NEVER OFF THE COURT!”

Fred Willard is absolutely perfect casting.

In conclusion, “Shut up, Nathan!”

The best part was Phil and his dad fixing the water heater.

Luke had a good line about Lily, something like “There’s no feeling in those eyes.”

The fish in the fountain was a set-up that you could see coming down the street.

I also appreciated Claire’s attempt to influence the contractor.

The Moby Dick thing must be some sort of joke. It’s a fantastic book and all, but I can’t see Jay wanting to read it aloud to anyone, especially a teenaged boy. The guy is sleeping in the same bed as Queequeg, well, that’s nothing, a man has to sleep somewhere, doesn’t he? But then there’s this:

It wasn’t a joke, the show usually has some sort of warm fuzzy ending. He was reading the book to Manny and doing a puppet show for Joe (Gio?) at the same time. He made everyone happy (including Gloria).

“Well, yes… in a sense…”

I thought the scenes with Joe reacting to Jay were priceless. They got a great smile from Joe in the beginning when Jay leaned over him. Then, during the puppet show, Joe’s eyes seemed to remain on the puppet even while Jay was taking a drink. It all made me wonder: Is the infant a better actor than the toddler playing Lily?

It’s good they found a way to Bond.

Anybody else think Cameron not quite as physically funny since losing some weight? seems like the snap left his physically delivery.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with the weight, but I’m finding him more annoying recently.

Great line:
“I thought it didn’t start flaming until the quarter hour.”

“Like there’s any emotion in those eyes!”

Also liked: “They’ll call me on their hologram phones and say, 'Help me dad, your my only hope, and I’ll be the happiest dad in sector 7. Or sector 12 if we’re doing really well”. And Luke and Mitch’s training session on the court was hysterical.

I just don’t get the slams on the actress playing Lily. Honestly, I find her delivery right on the money. But then…I’m not around real 4 year olds much. On the other hand, she delivers her snark exactly as I would imagine a preternaturally sarcastic 4 year old sitcom character would.

Her “No thanks, mister” to Mitch after he embarrassed himself losing to the handball kid was hilarious.

Yes, I loved that. Funny!

Alright, they went with a warm fuzzy ending.
Maybe it will reference again. I find the selection of that book a little odd. The prose practically begs to be read aloud, but it must use the s-word almost 500 times. It’s used so much it would be excessive for a Saturday Night Live sketch. I just can’t see Jay getting that far into it.

It’s not like it was just some random selection. Manny wanted to see Moby Dick. By reading Moby Dick he was making Manny happy. By reading it to Joe with a sock puppet; he was making the baby (and Gloria) happy.

And by drinking scotch while he was doing it, Jay made himself happy.

I thought Phil was going to have the thing explode in his face. That actually happened to someone I know when they tried to light one back when I was a kid.

Luke had the best part in the show, as usual. Wish they’d included more of him training Mitchell and not just shoved it all into the stinger.
