Modern Family 5/22 "Goodnight Gracie"

I wondered about that too. I thought there was going to be a joke about someone mistaking them for father and son or something. Their outfits weren’t exactly alike, but they were similar enough that I expected there to be some kind of payoff – especially since Cam and Manny don’t normally have scenes with just the two of them together.

I thought it was just meant to show how alike they both are---- both of them fit in at the retirement community almost instantly. It was perfectly suited for both Cam and Manny. Not only did they fit personality-wise, but apparently their wardrobes did, too.

That’s what I was thinking. Another great scene!

I wonder if it was meant to be reminescent of those old Bartles and Jaymes ads from the 80s.

I second this motion.

Ty Burell knocks it out of the park.

The scene with Claire and Phil pretending to be vacuum cleaner salespeople was great. Then Phil made Claire confess to making a mistake (“it’s part of the training”)…awesome.

Also…Luke to Manny…“It’s like you’ve never heard boys talk.”

WHO WAS WATCHING LILLY WHILE CAM AND MITCH WERE IN FLORIDA?!?!

Big missed opportunity here - I can only imagine how funny she would’ve been with the old ladies…“she’s cheating!”

“Lilly don’t be rude!”

“Why not? You said they have nothing left to live for…”

Careful, your face is going to freeze like that.

My eye doctor said I should do these exercises…

“You had an ass like a young Ann-Margret…”
“Yes, that was me!”

I for one did not miss Lily. Without her, Mitch and Cam can indulge in non-parental humor. We already have enough of that (parent-related humor, that is),

The show is called “Modern Family” you know. Not “Two Gay Guys” - they’ve made that show 40 or 50 times already. Heck the pilot episode revolves around Mitch and Cam adopting Lily.

“She reminds me of my abuela, with her head scarf and petty theft charges.”

“I may be a simple man, but if a dog don’t baaaahk…<dismissed> Thank God - I didn’t really have a close for that dog analogy.”

“It is a shame… SHAME!!!”

I didn’t get the part about her wanting her ashes thrown in the Pope’s face, though. Thoughts?

Probably she just didn’t like the Pope.

I didn’t think the episode was anything special. Not bad or anything, but far from the best this series is capable of.

Who goes out of state for their in law’s mother’s funeral? Would’ve made a lot more sense if just Phil and the rest of the Dunphy’s went. Maybe I could see Jay going if he’d been friendly with Phil’s parents for a long time but not Gloria (and she even had reason not to want to be there!!!) Manny & Cam/Mitchell? Come on…

But I’m just nitpicking. The funeral was clearly just a way to get them all off in some other locale without yet another whole family goes on vacation together plot. Is there some rule that every year they have to have a season finale set someplace other than home? It’s getting a bit trite.

Gracie’s story about the lighter was a pivotal point in her life. Given that she and Alex “had a special bond”, why did she withhold the story until she was dead?

I thought Gloria had to be there for her ridiculously coincidental but sitcommy-conveniently scheduled court date, for which Mitchel could ridiculously coincidentally act as her attorney.

So her funeral would be less boring.
