Modern Family, May 18, 2011 -- "See You next Fall"

So, what did you think of last night’s episode?

No one thought to go into the house and press “9” to open the gate?
Falling into the pool WAS funny.

Brian

Not up to the standards of the last 2 episodes, Mothers Day and Phil & Claire switch roles, but still very funny. The scene with Jay’s botox was the high point of the episode - “What were you thinking? You’re a veteran!”

I was glad Alex didn’t completely “valley girl” her speech.

Liked that Jay was wearing Cam’s hat at graduation.

No need, Luke opened the gate with his mind.

If it’s anything like the gate at my old development - you can’t just press ‘9’. Someone has to be calling you from that phone at the gate.

I was wondering about that (calling the phone in the house and pressing 9). And as for Luke opening the gate with his mind, was there a more ordinary explanation for how the gate was opened, while Luke believed he did so telepathically?

I also liked when Cam referred to himself as a “big-boned man”

Yeah, that was hilarious!

I think Luke and/or Manny used a cell to call themselves at the house then open the gate. That was the human mind trick Luke was referring to.

CAM: “Really, Mitchell? I could’ve died.”

My highlight was after Alex gives the “new” speech, which even she knew was lame, she got a standing O.
ALEX: “Seriously?”

HA!

“Mi nombre es Felipe!”

“Are you saying you need a ride to the school?”

Wasn’t the funniest of the season. The whole thing just seemed a little off and there was no real payoff. I found it hard to believe that a chain driven gate could have stymied that whole group. Even Luke could have figured out how to take off the drive cover and get the chain off the sprocket.

I simply didn’t get why Phil and Claire didn’t just call a cab to get to the graduation? And the other people in the family can’t just go out the front door and take a cab? Are they all idiots? Apparently so. That part of the show made zero sense to me. The only interesting part of the episode was the sister-to-sister interaction between the Dunphy sisters.

They only had a few minutes to get there and a taxi would have taken a long time to arrive.

I liked Jay’s reason for getting Botox- it wasn’t for Gloria but for himself. My sister is 52 and was complaining recently about how in her mind she’s 30 and I’m in my 20s but then when she looks in the mirror or sees me in person it doesn’t match.

Mitchell’s a little bitch sometimes, but I probably would have laughed when he went into the pool too, and when he ran into the screen door.

CAM: There’s some kind of Pritchett evil gene…
JAY: Be careful or you’ll run into it!

I always like seeing a lighter side of Jay, such as this one (when he’s laughing about Cam) or the one where he’s out with Cam and Mitchell on Gay Night, which had the great exchange

JAY: I used to say I was going to marry Gina Lollobrigida.
MITCH: Well dad, you kinda did.
JAY: I heard that!

I thought it was a VERY weak episode.

I didn’t laugh once and I thought the “laugh at the guy’s misnomers/but he’s offended” story line was stupid. Even the “awwwww” moment failed in my mind.

A very rare complete whiff on Modern Family’s part.

The “Pritchett evil gene” line was great!

And I know several people who are as nice as can be, but cannot help laughing when they see someone fall. So, that part of last night’s episode resonated with me.

And the exchange about Gina Lollobrigida, in the “Boys Night” episode, was hilarious. That was actually one of my very favorite episodes! I loved the way that Jay was forced into spending a day shopping with Pepper, Mitch and Cam’s ultra-flamboyant friend. Absolutely hilarious!

Yeah, I’ve never seen a gate like that that didn’t have a manual pedestrian gate next to it. :dubious: And wouldn’t a setup like that (no pedestrian access and the manual way to open the auto gate) violate some kind of building or safety code?

I loved the Mitch/Cam subplot. I would have laughed my ass off too, and not even tried to hide it . . . or I’d have been the one providing the laughs.
