So, what did everyone think of last night’s episode?
Liked it, but I was disappointed by the Ed O’Neill plotline. Once again it shows that a non-believer is better of hiding his true beliefs, even from those closest to him.
I understand your disappointment, but I did enjoy Manny’s reaction, though – the kid is rather easily rattled, isn’t he? Funny!
Terrified of butterflies? There is probably a specific name for that phobia, but I can’t imagine those things provoking fear in anybody. Of course, so many fears are completely irrational…
I was a little surprised by Jay’s (Ed O’Neill’s character) comment when Manny asked to go golfing with him. It was something like, “I’m probably going to have a Hispanic kid [i.e., the caddy at the club] carry my clubs. It might as well be you.” But it was funny otherwise.
Well, Jay is supposed to be a bit abrasive and insensitive.
i’m more surprised he played with bent clubs.
i didn’t like the episode very much. it was a good idea - that family fights like earthquakes build up and are released at inopportune moments, but i feel like they could have executed it better for all three arcs.
never mind
But we don’t know that he’s an unbeliever - he’s just not a church-goer. I think there are a lot of people who would say they believe in [Gg]od, but would rather play golf than go to church (course is less crowded on Sunday morning). There’s an old story about a church and the things they do (Xmas/Easter decorations, hard-hats, ambulances, etc) so that people can show up for a non-special Sunday.

A well below average episode. As usual, the storyline involving Mitchell and Cameron was awful. (Why gay rights groups aren’t upset about this show is beyond me.) Cringe inducing. And they bring in Nathan Lane? That’s never a good sign.
The interaction between Jay and Manny about heaven was almost good but ultimately went nowhere interesting.
How far away is tolerance?
Best scene was the interaction between Claire andt he plumber while trapped in the bathroom.
BTW, would you like me to ruin Modern Family for you? Pay attention to the frequency with which the actor that plays Phil blinks. Then try and stop.
I liked that whole conversation about how there’s no Hell, but Heaven has a separate area for bad people that’s walled off and surrounded by a lake of fire.
I think the implication was that he was agnostic at best, especially when he let slip that there probably isn’t even a heaven at all. He only walked that back after Manny freaked out.
I’m grounding you 4 weeks
You’re impossible
I’m doubling it to 8, and I’ll keep doubling it until you show some respect
Then you might as well make it 10
Oh my God how can you not think you need to study
I laughed so hard through this.
I didn’t much care for the Mitchell/Cameron plot either. Those two are at their best when they just act like a couple, not necessarily a gay couple.
I enjoyed the Jay/Manny scenes, but I was hoping for a little more meaningful conversation about the nature of religion. This show is smart enough to pull it off, but they backed away from the edge here.
The Phil/Claire bits were OK, not great. Phil is a tough character to keep from coming off too cartoonish. Ty Burrell usually does a good job walking that line, but this week he came down a little bit on the wrong side of it, IMO.
I think the show’s weakest episodes are the ones (like this) in which the three branches of the family have no intersecting story arcs or overlapping scenes. Despite the tenuous thematic link, these were three separate stand-alone stories, and the end result was a disjointed hodgepodge. It seems like a waste of this terrific ensemble cast to keep them apart so much.
