Modern Family Returns Tonight! 9-26-12

“Ew. Is this supposed to be some sort of hangover cure?”

“No.”

Phil: “Now I know what they mean about a pregnant woman glowing!”
Claire: “I’ve been pregnant three times.”

I don’t think Claire hates Gloria - I think their relationship is really complicated.

I loved the hangover “cure” - I was watching what she was putting in the smoothie - hot sauce? Some kind of peppers or pickles and some thick green goop? Oh yeah, that wasn’t intended to be kept down.

It was pickle relish - Claire was brilliant in that scene! LOL!!

Yeah, I kinda wondered exactly what Claire was doing when she was putting the relish into the blender …

I like Shorty’s advice on Phil growing a beard … “you’d look a little like Jon Hamm between projects.” Then we see Phil with a beard, and darned if Shorty wasn’t right.

“We can’t even get a cat…”

Plus Sriracha sauce.

I love how she complained that in her day, you hid your high school drinking instead of admitting it - “We showed our parents some respect!”

For what it’s worth, he said “French Canadian”.

Funny episode. Luke once again killed it with the “Grenade” line and the flash forward was surprising.

They need to be careful about making the older teenage girl too stupid. Her not knowing what ‘sarcastic’ means was a bit of a stretch.

“I thought the process was that I say ‘We’ll take this one,’ and you say ‘Thank God because we have too many cats.” “I was so mad, I almost didn’t buy this Fiestaware creamer.”

This show for me is like the Breaking Bad of comedy - it shames every other comedy show out there. Until Archer comes back anyway.

I had the same thought. Maybe she should have used “sardonic”.

Yeah, me too! Hilarious!

Manny’s line reading was so bad that I turned on subtitles. I thought my room acoustics were particularly bad, or the dishwasher was particularly loud…but no, it was just him.

The elephant & gorilla was the funniest thing I’ve seen on TV in…god, years?

(And is it really that complicated to adopt a cat? This is the 2nd show I’ve seen this month where a family has to jump through hoops to get a pet. (Parenthood being the other)

I’m not sure about cats from an adopt-a-thon like that, but my aunt runs a dog rescue and home visits etc are all part of the program. Of course, they were setting them up for the “Look, we almost adopted a baby”/“Why couldn’t you then” line. I saw that one about as 10 seconds early. It was as easy to spot as Jay falling back into the water as soon as he said his clothes were dry.

At the city shelter I volunteer at, about 50% of dog adoptions are denied for one reason or another. Don’t know what the rate is for cats, but the process is the same, and requires an application, questionnaire, and interview with the shelter manager or someone similarly qualified. We don’t require home visits, but it’s not a given that you can get any dog you want.

And this is just at the city shelter/animal care and control. The process is stricter at rescue organizations and the such.

“The garage has a bathroom…well, a half-bath. Actually, it’s a coffee can.”

Brilliant.

I always thought that stiffness was purposeful. Not necessarily of Manny’s acting abilities, but at least purposefully cast like that. To me, it’s always felt like a child trying desperately hard to act years above his age, and coming off as awkwardly calculated and stiff. Or maybe I’m just making excuses for his acting. Still, for me, it works.

I’m with the crowd. I’ve found him charming in previous seasons, but this episode, he was just annoying. Maybe because the ‘cutely mature for his age’ has morphed into 'awkwardly trying to appear grownup?" I don’t know what happened, but it’s not good.

Mitch’s preface to this dialog was, IMHO, a very subtle watershed moment in TV. He says something like “adopting babies is something relatively new for the gay community…” We’ve had gay characters on TV for years and years; but for a gay character to talk about what it’s like to be gay, and to be a member of the gay community., is different and more honest.

I think this show has probably changed attitudes in America about gays and gay rights.

I was half-expecting them to do a Monty Python thing: “You had a coffee can? We had a hole in the road.”

Loved the elephant and gorilla. I laughed so hard, good thing my bladder wasn’t full.

You had a hole in the road? All I had was a wet shoebox for me and my 13 brothers and sisters.
