Modern Family - season 3, ep 24 - Call Me Baby - May 23, 2012

The bit at the hospital where she let the woman talk about the baby in Spanish and then turned to Cam to say “so did you get all that?” so he would let her do her translation was pretty funny.

And, when Claire is running down all the ways life with Dylan will be difficult and she says something about, you can’t go shopping - that little “Eep!” that Haley lets out was priceless.

Some of it might have to do with the way she talks. Eva Longoria speaks with no accent. I can’t picture Selma Hayek speaking and Penolope Cruz doesn’t have the same…fire…in her voice that Sophia has. Her [Cruz’s] voice seems to be much softer and a bit less rough around the edges, even when she’s yelling.

Really liked this episode. Watched with my daughter and she was in tears when Alex’s prom date showed up.

I like how Luke sees Lilly as a train-wreck; I forget the exact line. He and Manny often steal the show.

And Cam and Mitchell want Luke to babysit for her.

Came here to say that! The sister was very attractive!

Alex’s date was a total ripoff of Sue’s ex-boyfriend and now just friend on the Middle. He was even in the episode the night this aired, so it stuck out like a sore thumb. Only difference is Alex knows the deal, and Sue’s oblivious (even thought the parents find it obvious).

That scene at the hospital was utterly stupid, and might even be shark jump material. Yes, they mention mexican soap operas, but to have one show up in the show’s “real life” just comes off as bizarre.

Luke hiding all the mail with all the callbacks to past episodes was funny. Especially when he got to the one where he and Manny stole the car.

Didn’t Jay have a line in there somewhere about how he was “too old for this” when dealing with Lily? Heh.

Sophia Vergara is a natural blonde, she dyes her hair dark for her roles. Probably doesn’t matter to your opinion (and why should it) but I just thought it was interesting.

I think they cast the entire Spanish show within a show as extremely attractive to play up the idea that it was a soap opera. Even the Grandmother was a nice looking senior.

Alex had two of my favorite lines of the night:

“I’m his beard… his pre-beard. His stubble.”

&

“Okay, you got the picture.”
Though I almost hope it turns out to be a false pregnancy. Jay’s simply too damned old to be a father; he’s going to be 80 when that kid is Manny’s age.

It wasn’t just the shopping - it was the fact that Claire told her she’d have to wear Alex’s hand-me-downs. Eep!

And then later in the discussion, when Phil is describing the barren wasteland she and Dylan will be living in, Hayley asks, “Tell me again how Dylan got the nuclear codes?” Phil replies (as if it’s obvious), “During the robot wars!” That must have been some interesting tale Phil wove.

Often when a show starts adding babies, you can almost hear the shark approaching. Cam and Mitch getting another, not too bad. Gloria and Jay, kind of creepy weird (the kid will be the aunt/uncle of Jay’s teenaged grandkids). Phil and Claire, just please no. The kids they have already are super annoying. Phil and Claire are super annoying, for that matter. The show works best when they’re not in the limelight.

And please no simultaneous pregnancies (sisters, mother/daughter) where the babies are born on the same day. Hijinks at the hospital!!! Nooooooooo.

I tuned in late to this week’s episode. Apparently there was some plan to have Claire carry Cam & Mitch’s biological baby. What was that all about?

The tabloids are reporting that Sofia Vergara broke up with her long-time boyfriend recently; no reports of a real-life pregnancy.

I loved this line, especially because it took me a second to get its double meaning.

Agreed, x100. Please don’t ruin this show with a baby for ratings’ sake.

Yeah, that was one hot woman!

That wasn’t this week’s episode, that was a rerun.

I’m hoping for a false pregnancy, as well. Hate the new baby!

Claire and Gloria are becoming this generation’s Mary Ann & Ginger or Betty & Veronica.

If I have a complaint about this show it’s that- whether due to writing or acting- Cam and Mitchell aren’t always as believable as a couple as Claire/Phil and Jay/Gloria. I liked that this episode showed some intimacy between them in the filling station scene.

I also loved Cameron’s opening zinger, when he’s doing his twirls and Mitchell tells him “too bad you can’t turn into Wonder Woman doing that”.

Cam: I can’t even talk about it.

It was a recent episode. Claire agreed to donate an egg and be a surrogate (so that a baby would be half Pritchett/half [whatever Cam’s name is] it when she and Mitchell were both drunk and emotional; when they got sober and rational both had decided it was a terrible idea but didn’t want to offend the other by saying it.

I loved that episode!

Anyone else love Phil’s IKEA joke when telling Haley the horrors of living together?

“All of a sudden you’re using an allen wrench to put together a Fjurn because you couldn’t afford the Knerd.” (or something like that)

Am I the only person who thinks that Mitch and Cam will wind up adopting Gloria’s baby? As soon as she announced her pregnancy, my immediate reaction was “How convenient.”
