Modern Family, Wednesday, January 12, 2011 -- "Our Children, Ourselves"

So, what did everyone think of last night’s episode?

I liked it, but the memory of Gloria in her blue silk nightie has pushed all other memory of the episode right out of my mind.

Except for Cam & Mitch each saying “I need to have my reaction.”

The whole mistaking-a-midget-for-a-child bit seemed a little (no, a lot) contrived for this show, but a pretty solid episode anyway.

Always good to see Mary Lynn Rajskub.
Croctopus!
And, yes… the Blue Nightie!!

Holy crap! I just realized where I’d seen her before - she’s Gail the Snail from “Always Sunny”.

I loved this episode. I always like jokes that ‘come back around’ be it later in an episode or in a stand up routine. I found myself LOLing when Jay drank out of the dribble cup.

I never would have put that together, but Gail was a one off character. Not in a million years. However, Steph was a MadTV regular.

And I see that this episode was directed by Adam Shankman. Odd.

Phil & Claire had the best storyline this week. I really loved watching those two play off each other.

I agree about the “mistaking a midget for a kid” thing. There were more interesting things that could have been done with the “Mitchell slept with a woman – twice!” idea.

Gloria & Jay had the weakest story this week, IMO. I found myself tuning out parts of their scenes, and the dribble cup gag was way too obvious (no offense, Joey P :)).

“You naughty little girl!”

“Well, that’s what happens when I drink Kahlua.”

I looked “hard” for some blemish, imperfection, anything. There aren’t any… zip, zero, nada. That woman is hell on wheels.

Are you talking about the silver Camaro driver? The one with the house listing? If so, I recognized her as the gal from Twister that Helen Hunt’s ex was engaged to.

Okay, the delay from the Presidentail address meant we were both viewing old episodes and catching this one late so I’ve several in my mind. There was a scene where they’re trying to teach Manny and Gloria how to ride a bike. Gloria says there’s no reason a bike should stay upright without training wheels. Jay looks at Gloria and says “Well, you shouldn’t either but…”

Heh.

Also, the parent of the kid with the highest score they saw at the movies, wasn’t that the Fiber One guy?

I meant Tracy, Mitch’s prom date and 10 year high school reunion drunken nurse’s office hookup.

And yes, I immediately recognized Dr. Patel (or was he the professor) as the Fiber One guy as well.

Yeah, the midget thing was a little out there, but the Little Slugger thing more than made up for it.

I have to admit, the “midget thing” took me completely by surprise. Did not expect that!

Ditto. I figured it was going to be another facet of the “modern family”. I just assumed they were introducing a new story line.

As soon as I saw the background shot of the back of a short redhead’s head, I knew what the gag was. “Little Slugger” made up for it, though.

You know, I pictured the midget taking offense at Mitchell’s comment/ inappropriate gift, and physically attacking him, kind of like Kramer’s midget pal Mickey would do in “Seinfeld”. And I’ll bet that “Little Slugger” could take Mitch out, just like Mickey always got the better of Kramer when they engaged in fisticuffs!

Phil: They killed HER, but she laid eggs.
Claire: <gasp> Croctopii?!?!

That was hilarious!

Here in Washington DC we didn’t get to see the episode at all! Channel 7 carried the Tucson memorial service live. (I record the show and wait until half an hour before the next week’s broadcast to watch it, so I only just found out.)

They did that everywhere. They showed a new The Middle at 8pm, then went to the memorial service, then showed the new Modern Family at around 9:20, then for the final 10 or so minutes before 10pm they showed the final 10 minutes of the Modern Family episode where the oldest daughter broke up with her boyfriend and Phil got them back together.

To review, we got the regularly scheduled The Middle, the new Modern Family around 20 minutes late, and they bumped both Better With You and Cougar Town.

In order to avoid missing the bumpers between sitcoms I tape all four as one show in a single 2 hour block. (I also do this Mondays and Thursdays.) In this instance that was particularly helpful.
