Modern success stories: How did you meet your SO?

We’ve all heard the stories about how hard it is to meet people these days (and I’m talking about in the last 5-10 years). We’re working longer hours, dating co-workers is discouraged, fewer of us attend church, etc. Hence the proliferation and acceptance of all those on-line dating services (yes, dating services and personal ads have been around for a long time, but until recently they imparted a stigma of “loser” upon anyone who used them).

So, for those people who have somehow managed to find the love of their lives against all odds in this crazy modern world, how did you meet them?

Personally, I stopped going to church when I turned 30 and my dating life completely disappeared as a result. Dating co-workers was out of the question, and I’m just not the bar-going type. I eventually decided to try all manner of on-line dating sites and even went on one of those 7-minute dating things, all to no avail. What finally did it for me, however, was when one of my co-workers asked if I would be interested in meeting a friend of his family (the daughter of his father’s best friend). We met, we clicked, and 10 months later we got married.

Although I didn’t find my significant other on-line, I have to admit that the whole process of on-line dating got me into the correct frame of mind so that I was willing to accept my co-worker’s offer to meet his friend.

Anybody else want to share?

Regards,

Barry

In school.

Me too. We met in highschool.

I met mine through a friend that met him online.

Mrsrobgruver and I met through a mutal friend.

Highschool best friend turned GF.

Chatting online. Then, as I was immigrating she invited me for a holiday here. The next day we were moved in together

In the SCA.

I met my SO through a friend at a Christmas party.

I was her TA for Engineering Economics 201

I met my sweetie playing Spades on Yahoo. He was a great partner in cards and in life.

I got picked up at a bar

I went to a music show at a club. The guy next to me made a funny comment. We talked between acts and after the show was over. We exchanged numbers and went on a date a few days later. That was last June, and I’m still with him.

I was finishing Grad school in AZ, so was she. I was bartending she was a waitress. I struck up a conversation about how I lived back east in Connecticut. She said she was from CT as well!! I was so psyched! We went out on a couple dates, she finished her PhD a year before I did, and then we moved back here. And are living happily ever after. She is the perfect woman. Thoughful, courteous, honest, trustworthy, remarkably intelligent, very pretty. We love to do the same things and I bring her fresh flowers at least twice a month for no other reason than to say, I love you. I could not ask for anything better, I can safely say I am proud to walk down the street with this wondrous woman. I am sure if you asked her, she’d reciprocate my motion.

Oh and that was 8 years ago.

A mutual friend set us up.

I’d made a point of avoiding anyone this particular friend (call her Bubbles) set me up with, because she’d set me up with some remarkably bizarre women in the past, even by my standards.

…so for several weeks, I managed to avoid giving a straight answer, etc.

One day, when I was over visiting, Bubbles gave her friend a whistle on the phone, and very suddenly handed ME the phone, and I found myself talking to some strange woman.

She didn’t SOUND crazy. She sounded kind of interesting, actually.

So we went out. Stayed out, too. Stayed up half the night, talking. Utterly fascinating woman. She seemed halfway interested in me, too.

We were married a year or so later.

In a youth hostel in Barcelona. Yeah, I know. He was from Texas, I was living in France at the time. We spent 2 1/2 weeks traveling around Spain and he spent a little time with me back in France before he had to go back home. We emailed tons while I was still in France and when I moved back the US, we started the daily phone calls. I was living in VA, him still in TX, and we spent 1 1/2 years doing that. Now he’s here in VA with me! Who knew that the love of my life was my Christmas vacation fling?

At work. We worked in the same department (that I had transferred into) and hit it off. Large company, many employees.

In a newsgroup. Yes, women use Usenet! I was as shocked as you are. We “met” there, chatted on ICQ, etc. etc.

I have met two extraordinary SOs in my life. The first was in a college ballroom dance class. We clicked on and off the floor. Before we had even gone out on a date it was overheard from other students, “I bet their doing that horizontally as well.” We were good.

Current GF I met when she called to get me to participate in a presentation for the closing of a University fundraising drive. Never overlook those annoying telemarketers (though that was far from her job) as potential dates!

I was living in a university boarding house in Adelaide, SA back in 1994. One of my friends was juggling relationships with a couple of guys at the same time. Leechboy who had been interested in her when they were going to highschool together drove over from Melbourne, VIC especially to see her. The night he arrived, the two other guys she’d been dating also showed up. She asked me to distract Leechboy for her, which I did and to make a long story short here we are 9 years later married for 2 and bit years with a 11 week old baby girl.
