Monkey Island 6 is coming out this year. Return to Monkey Island

I asked this 12 years ago and now it has been announced.

Ron Gilbert announced it on April Fool’s Day because he had tweeted 9 years ago that if he ever announced Monkey 6, he would do it on April Fool so no one would believe him. He did, no one believed him…but IT IS TRUE!

Return to Monkey Island comes out this year.

This is the series that started all those years ago from Lucas Arts?

Oh, yes. It’s back and even has the same voice actor as Guybrush.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of “Tales” but it was alright.

More excitingly, this one is being done by Terrible Toybox who did the excellent “Thimbleweek Park” so I’m really looking forward to it.

And, of course, Dominic Armato is back to voice Guybrush, so all is well with the world.

I liked it quite a bit, but I also like Escape to Monkey Island(#4), which is also reviewed a lot worse by most people.

Anyway, I’m pretty pumped. I’m getting it immediately.

I loved all the Monkey Island games, from the beginning. I’m really looking forward to this.

I really liked Escape from Monkey Island, but I can see how Monkey Kombat would be a turnoff. And the 3D part. A lot of 2D games from the 90s aged better graphically than the early 3D stuff (“Curse of Monkey Island” is still gorgeous), though “Grim Fandango” remains a particular favorite despite a bit of 3D clunkiness.

I think where Tales fell a bit flat for me was the episodic nature. Each of the 5 chapters had to be fairly self-contained, puzzle-wise. I suppose the other games also divide things into major blocks but it felt more constraining than usual for some reason. Still liked it fine, just not as much as the others.

Totally picking Return from Monkey Island up. The locus of point and click adventure games has shifted to Europe but there’s still some life in the genre over here.

Yes!!! I barely play games, but I contributed to “Thimbleweed Park” and have my name in the phone book in-game. (I was a day too late in submitting my audio answering machine message.) I live his work and sense of humor. Maniac Mansion was great growing up, but Zak McCracken was my favorite. And, of course, the Monkey Island games except for that #%^@&$ monkey wrench puzzle. Thimbleweed Park was a very mature extension of point-and-click puzzle philosophy that was completely fair, so I look forward to the newest addition in the line-up.

I think calling my friend on the phone to discuss puzzles while we played the first Monkey Island(each on our own PC’s) is such a great memory for me. I remember us both being on Monkey Island sometimes getting to school the next day to discuss what we had each found.

I think with the internet, some of that thrill is gone.

So excited!

The game will be set between LeChuck’s Revenge and Curse of Monkey Island, so it’ll be something of a MI2.5, I guess?

I guess. Murray appears to be in it and I think Guybrush met him in the opening of Monkey 3. Unless Murray really isn’t in it but was just in the teaser.

Yes, Murray first appeared in MI3, so I’m wondering how they’ll rejigger events to include him in the new game.

Yeah, a friend of mine noticed Murray, too.

I figured it doesn’t matter. Don’t let narrative consistency get in the way of a good game crosses fingers.

Interestingly Ron Gilbert had nothing to do with anything after Monkey Island 2 LeChuck’s Revenge, those subsequent games were made without his input, so that’s why this is set to be a continuation of his episodes. However, Dominic Armato* and Murray were both introduced in Curse Of… so that’s interesting that he felt the continuity had to be maintained in reverse.

*Dominic did retroactively voice the first two games in the remakes made a few years back

We will never know what the ending of LeChuck’s Revenge really meant…

Well that’s the point. Now we will know.

Will we?

WILL WE?!?!?! :weary:

(I hope so.)

Trailer showing Guybrush and more gameplay.

The graphics/art-style getting A LOT of negative feedback online. I won’t care if it is funny and has great puzzles, but I will admit…I was surprised what the game looks like.

It doesn’t look bad to me. Perhaps I was expecting much worse given the comments. I personally would have liked artistic stylings in the vein of Rob Gilbert’s last project, Thimbleweed Park, which has an updated throwback/8 or 16-bit kind of aesthetic, but this isn’t objectionable.

Who is the woman fighting Marley at 14 seconds in? Is it LeFlay, because then they are acknowledging the last game.

I remember not liking the Curse graphics when it came out, but it really grew on me, so this might as well. 4 had the wonky controls, and also some questionable logic puzzles.
