Doesn’t the sea get, like, totally lightless at around 800 feet? Seems like anything living below that depth would eventually devolve its eyes (like cave dwellers will), making the angler fish’s light essentially useless. Clearly I’m wrong about something though–lotsa deep sea fishes seem to have ginormous eyes. So how far down DOES sunlight get?

There are enough bioluminescent creatures at depth to make vision still useful.

Meh, it’s only nine inches long. It might get a chunk of my leg, but it’s not going to kill me. Plus, it’s slow, so even if I didn’t see it coming, it’s not going to get a second bite.
