I know zero about Moon Knight, not having even heard of this superhero before this show was announced.
The first episode was really excellent. I still have zero clue what is going on, but I said to my wife, “Hey, this is better than almost all movies that will be released this year.”
Did anyone else watch it? I was also very impressed with Oscar Isaac, playing a very different character than Poe Dameron, the character I’ve seen him play the most.
I definitely want to see more and appreciate this was definitely different but I think this would have been better served by having two episodes available upfront. I think a lot of people will turn this off wondering what the hell they just saw.
I watched. I liked. I will continue to watch. I haven’t read any Moon Knight comics, but was aware the character existed. I have seen a few articles about the show that mention some fans wanted confirmation that the character will be Jewish as in the comics. That made me wonder how the heck he is then an avatar of an Egyptian god?
I really enjoyed it, too. The blank spaces in his memory reminded me a little of Leonard Shelby from Memento (specifically the part where Leonard is running, and thinks “why am I chasing this guy” which quickly turns to “crap! He’s chasing me!”)
I wonder if this will be a standalone series or setting MK up for future Avenger-y type still. A crossover with Blade would be interesting. Have the rest of the Marvel magic crew treat MK as the kind of “uh oh” type hero the MCU needs but doesn’t quite understand.
The part where he tried to hand over the scarab and couldn’t was great. His initial look of surprise really stood out to me. His other stuff was really good too, of course.
I am familiar with the character. I tried reading the series that came out in the late 80s but it didn’t really hook me. Despite that, I like the concept and I hope this series does a good job of building on this first ep.
I thought it was very enjoyable. As others have already mentioned, Isaac is the main draw and his performance is excellent, just a bit over the top to emphasize Steven’s nebbishness. The editing was top notch, bouncing us around and reinforcing Steven’s disorientation. The overall atmosphere was a good mix of creepy/foreboding and humorous, as many of the best Marvel shows are.
To pick a few nits, I will say I did not like how his boss was written at all - just way too over-the-top mean and abusive. Really took me out of it. And surprisingly, I did not like F. Murray Abraham as the disembodied voice. He’s one of my all time favorite actors, but something about this did not work for me. Was the mix too loud? Was it something in the performance? I can’t pin down exactly why, but I didn’t like it.
