MoP-ing up after the Cataclysm: Updated WoW General Discussion 8/22/12

It’s quite a grind for a subtlety rogue to get Exalted with the Emperor faction on Timeless Isle - considering I can’t solo ANY of the elites. Basically my only hope is to find a group. Starting to seriously consider a respec.

I did manage to get Exalted with the Anglers and scored the Azure Water Strider mount, which has come in handy. Getting Best Friends with Nat Pagle is something else entirely.

I know you don’t have to get exhalted to buy the weapons, since I got one and I know for sure I didn’t grind to exhalted. I think you only have to be honored, which is pretty easy.

Yeah, the problem is the 20,000 Timeless Coins. I’m more inclined to run around opening chests than killing things…once you get your purple for the day, you get 300-some TC per chest.

It gets better. My sub rogue is actually my best-geared character, thanks to her finding a lot of Burdens of Eternity. (She doesn’t raid or do dungeons, so all her gear is either Timeless stuff, or PvP gear.)

Tips:

• Make sure you’re using all three of the buff consumables (there’s a pink crystal, a drink, and a book thing - sorry, can’t remember the names of the items off the top of my head). They drop from mobs, and are given as rewards from Shaohao’s daily quest. These provide very helpful buffs.

• Eat the various foods (apples turtle eggs, and red crystals are easiest to find). They provide a nice health boost.

• Keep your eyes open for sparkling shrines, and right-click them. They provide various major buffs. The buffs are random, and based on the four Celestials: Xuen: +15% damage; Niuzao: take 25% less damage; Yu’lon: +20% to all stats; Chi Ji: More crit, more haste.

• Until you’re better-geared, stick to the pink birds and the oxen. And maybe the turtles. Stay away from the snakes, tigers, and frogs. Once you’re well-geared, the frogs are the most efficient targets. Just wait between frogs for the poison to wear off, and then heal up as best you can before engaging the next frog - if you get 10 stacks of poison, you die, no matter how much health you have. The tigers are just annoying.

I’m now able to barely, when lucky, fully buffed, and not distracted, to solo a Gulp Frog.

Question: Can you use a Burden of Eternity to improve an EXISTING Timeless item that you’ve been wearing? Or do you have to use one while creating a new Timeless item from a raw?

You can use it to improve an existing one, I’m almost certain. It’s been a while, but I think I did this with a couple of mine.

I’m pretty sure you have to use the Burden on a token. I’ve tried to use them on “activated” gear (can’t think of a better term), and it didn’t work. I remember some people saying they used Burdens on activated gear, but I suspect that was a bug, which has since been fixed.

Unfortunately, I can’t test this. I can’t remember the last time I had a Burden drop for me.

Also, Burdens don’t work on the trinket tokens.

Oops, you’re right. I should have checked Wowhead before responding to this. Apologies.

Another tip: If you can get to where you can kill the big blue crabs, they will occasionally drop an item called “Scuttler’s Shell”. Using the item will place a rather silly-looking turtle shell on your head (overriding your helm’s appearance). It has the effect of reducing your aggro radius. You can get quite close to a hostile mob, and they won’t notice you. It’s extremely handy when you’re running through the tiger area - you can run/ride right past the tigers and the giants without them attacking you. It’s also handy in the frog area, where frogs can frequently respawn right next to you while you’re fighting another frog (unless you’re very well-geared, you don’t want two frogs on you at the same time).

Killing the blue crabs isn’t all that hard, as long as you can avoid their special attack. As soon as they start it (watch for their cast bar), run straight through them so that you’re behind them. They won’t turn around while winding up and executing the attack. Unless you’ve managed to get the underwater helm from the chest on the sunken ship guarded by hozen (the helm grants underwater breathing and faster swim speed, for 15 minutes), don’t attempt to engage the crabs underwater - you won’t be able to swim fast enough to get behind them. Find the crabs in the turtle area hanging out in shallow water, and use Throw to pull them onto dry land.

Also, I asked earlier about your server, momentarily forgetting that cross-server grouping is now possible. My Battle Tag is: MisterRik#1791. You can send me a Battle Tag friend request, and if we’re on at the same time we can group up. I’d be happy to help out

This Molten Core solo run was a first: THREE T1 pieces for the class actually running it dropped. The pants, helm, and chest. My rogue already had the pants, but the helm and chest were the last two pieces she was missing.

My priest only needs the belt to complete her T1. Odd piece to be missing, given that it’s dropped by trash.

I don’t have too much of an aggro issue generally, being a subtlety rogue I’m well-adapted to skulking around and running away! XD Since getting a handful of Timeless items improved with Burdens, and putting some decent gems and enchants and such on those, my DPS has gotten a lot better. I can tackle most 91 elites on TI as long as I’m not tanking more than 1. The grind to Exalted with the Emperor faction is nevertheless quite a job. I’m about 50% to Revered, and I have most of the 100k timeless coins for the mount already (75k). The mount that Huolon drops refuses to drop for me, unfortunately, despite at least 50 kills.

I’ve yet to get any new flying mounts at all since I came back to WOW, actually. I feel so outclassed on my old albino drake, in a flock of Ashes of Alar and Vitreous Stone Drakes and such. And I used to have an enviable mount collection back in the day! Are there any easy ones I should go after before the Timeless Isle one?

The only flying mounts I’ve gotten in MoP have been the various wind serpents. And I don’t use them at all, because I absolutely hate the way they handle. (Well, okay, correction: I’ve also purchased the Fey Dragon and that two-headed Iron-something mount from the cash shop. And the Red Flying Cloud from the Lorewalkers.) I generally prefer the smaller flying mounts.

Now working on getting from Revered to Exalted, but it’s slow going. I’ve got a full set of Timeless gear now except for the necklace which I’ve still yet to find. About half of my Timeless stuff has been upgraded with the Burdens I’ve gotten as drops.

Honestly, I am not sure why I’m bothering, since I know that whatever gear I manage to scratch together will be completely outdated after the expansion. Mostly I’m just after the mount. I want to have at least one flying mount from MoP to show for all my troubles, hehe.

The “thundering onyx cloud serpent” mount dropped for me, today.

Too bad I can’t ride cloud serpents yet! >. <

Dammit, I czn ride those, but the fucker hasn’t dropped for meq1

Grats! I’ve never caught a sniff of that even with more than a dozen Huolon kills on my main alone. Gotta love when the RNG gods smile on you!

D’OH! :smack:
It’s a bit of a grind, but on a day-by-day basis it isn’t too much time out of your time per day. And you can get lucky with dragons’ eggs (onyx eggs in the same area as the Cloud Serpent dailies, and the quivering firestorm eggs that drop off of Huolon or the other red cloud serpents on Timeless Isle.) They’re rep turnins for 500 and 1000 each, before any bonuses you have, and can help a lot.

Pretty good faction guide on Wowhead.

Again, grats!

Grats! I’m envious – I’ve been Exalted with the Cloud Serpent faction since last year and have been there for the Huolon kill at least 3 dozen times, and no drop. I’m starting to think I’ll get Exalted with Emperor Shaohao and obtain the Heavenly Golden mount via Timeless coins first.

Seriously, I got enough Quivering Eggs to get my main to Exalted and my alt nearly to Revered. Huolon’s a bastard.

It took approximately forever to get one of the invitations. I actually tried farming it off of Pandaria rarespawns briefly after Patch 5.3 went live, but asides from useless blues and the occaisional useful item (like a Battle Horn), I got plenty o’ nuthin. So I let it go and resumed farming Timeless Isle and LFRing. And trying to upgrade alts.

Months later (this past week), I decide to fly out to Isle of Giants and farm some dinosaur bones. (I was at about 2000/99999 for the Reins of the Bone White Primal Raptor. It’s a hell of a grind, but if you have bank space you can take it in little chunks.)

I pass by the spot that Nessos the Oracle spawns, and he’s up. “What the hell,” I think, “he’ll take something like 20 seconds to kill and I’m in a shooty mood.”

I kill him and he drops the Blood-Soaked Invitation. Just like that, I’m in. Go figure. Once I give up, I get it. There’s gotta be some zen-like lesson in that.

Anyway, I go ahead and grind out some dino bones anyway, since I’m in the neighborhood.

Couple of days later, I check out the Brawlgar Arena.

I jump in on the fights. It’s a standard sequence, documented in this Wowhead guide pretty well.

It took less than an hour to get to Rank 4.

The fights are stupid easy for a hunter. I think I overgear the earliest encounter pitifully. (My weakest gear is fully upgraded LFR purpz.) Also, in any of the fights with a dangerous mechanic (so far), those mechanics are pretty easy to avoid if you’re not melee. (Sorry, rogues. I think that Blizz secretly hates rogues.)

I died once, the very first fight in fact, against the first and absolutely scrubbiest of the bosses, simply because I run multi-monitor/windowed and accidentally put window focus outside of WoW, so in-game I was just standing there getting Chomped. :smack:

I anticipate some of the Rank 7 or higher fights will actually be challenging, but not impossible. Soloing Timeless Isle elites (and rare elites) and LFRing is enough training in class-specific mitigation technicques, so even if the fights aren’t tank-and-spank, I suspect I’ll do OK.

Fun fun!

So I know I’m late to the party, but I am considering doing the epic cloak questline. I’ve never had a legendary item before, which is my main motivation.

What do you guys think? Waste of time?

Also, I keep hearing about this transmog thing (you make one item LOOK like another item) and since I like to fish, I thought it might be cute to transmog my daggers into Dark Herring. Can that be done? How much does it cost?

Sadly, you can’t transmog your daggers to fish. Blizzard has some stupid policy where you can’t do “silly” transmogs (I’m still annoyed that you can’t use the leather armor chestpiece that makes your character look like he’s not wearing a shirt as a transmog–I wanted to do a demon-hunter outfit. But apparently that’s considered “silly” too.)

I kinda think Blizz needs to get over themselves and let people transmog to any available piece, silly or not.
