MoP-ing up after the Cataclysm: Updated WoW General Discussion 8/22/12

As mine.

Actually, looking at the bottom ofthis Wowhead guide, it appears that all of the sha-touched weapons drop from either the last boss of Heart of Fear (Empress Shek’zeer), or the last three bosses of Terrace of Endless Spring (Tsulong, Lei Shi, or Sha of Fear).

Since we were talking about rogues earlier (Sarabellum1976’s toon), the roguish weapons (agility fist weapon, agility dagger) drop from Sek’zeer and from Lei Shi (third boss of ToES), respectively.

Still, they’re not actually necessary to continue on the cloak questline. You get the sha-touched legendary gem at the end of Chapter I, but you can only use it on a sha-touched weapon. Those weapons are completely outclassed now by the Siege of Orgrimmar drops. I went to the trouble of getting Taoren, but it’s just sitting in the bank with the Crystallized Dread legendary gem and the additional prismatic socket attached. Because I’m a collector. Go figure.

The only useful thing I’ve gotten out the cloak quest line, other than the cloak, is the legendary meta gem from Chapter III. That’s a good one; frankly, there’s nothing better to put into a helmet meta slot right now.

Actually, you only had to do the quest once(weekly/daily quests had not been invented yet), after that Duke Hydraxxis would give a new bottle as often as you’d like, but you could only carry one at a time. So in theory you could have one person travel back and forth between MC and Azshara. This was impractical(warlocks could not summon inside instances back then), but not impossible.
So it wasn’t quite as annoying as you make it sound.

But the Eternal Quintessence(which had a 1h cd) wasn’t added until patch 1.11.
[/nitpick]

I’m just quoting this because it bears repeating in bold text:The legendary cloak quest is being REMOVED when WoD is released.
So if you haven’t done it yet you’d better hurry up.

Reading **Mogle’**s link carefully, I see that “REMOVED” is in two parts:

Good news is that the 3-week pause (Test of Valor) in the middle of the quest chain will evaporate. And there’ll probably a lot of activity surrounding the other requirements, so it’ll be easier to get groups. And they’re bringing back Gaze of the Black Prince for the rest of the life of pre-expack MoP:

So the sigils, titan artifacts, and runestones may drop at a rate that makes progress through the rest of the quest chain practical before 13 Nov.

Anyone know when the WoD pre-expac patch (6.0.2) goes live?

Know? No, Blizzard hasn’t made any announcement yet, but at some point they did say that the pre-patch would come 4-6 week before the expansion release.

Six weeks before Nov 13 is Oct 2, which means that the very earliest we could expect 6.0 is Sep 31(or Nov 1 for us on the EU servers), but that seems just a bit early to me. Four weeks would be Oct 16, leaving Oct 7(8) or 14(15) as the two most likely candidates for patch days.

This means that if you get the Sigil part done asap(can actually be done in one reset if you kill all bosses that can drop them) you’ll have 4-5 full resets to collect all the Secrets and Runestones, and since WoD’s release is on a Thursday you should get a day or two of the last reset just before the release as well.

Okay, it’s looking more and more doable for me, then. There’s a 50% extra Valor buff on at the moment, so I’m at nearly 1000 for the week already. And if I don’t hit 3000 by the time 6.0 comes out, no biggie, I can just skip on to whatever’s next.

And I don’t manage to get it done by expansion launch, well, at least I tried.

I’ve added five new mounts to my collection lately - the Huolon drop (Thundering Onyx Cloud Serpent) the regular golden cloud serpent, the Emperor Shaohao 100k timeless coins & exalted rep (Heavenly Golden Cloud Serpent) and an oldie that I never got back in the day, the Twilight Drake. Plus the big 3-seater mammoth from Dalaran. And there’s two more cloud serpents (blue and green) awaiting my having an extra 5000 gold to buy them. So I’m closing in on the 100 mount achievement now.

Grats on that! The mount grind can be quite tiring, but it seems you’re doing very well.

I’ve had a nice run of luck on Primal Raptor mounts. (Grinding dinosaurs on Isle of Giants to buy the Bone-white Primal Raptor.)

I had a Primal Egg drop a week and a half ago and it hatched out into a Black Primal Raptor. After that hatched, I got another Primal Egg out of a Throne of Thunder failbag, and that hatched out into a Green Primal Raptor. Then, earlier this week, I got another Primal Egg off a dino. It hatches tomorrow (or late tonight). I’m not holding my breath that it’d be the last color I don’t already have (Red Primal Raptor), since the odds are 2/3 that I’d get a color I already have. But I can hope.

I’m also one annoying achievement from the 10-man Ulduar meta achievement which gives a protodrake. I’ll try that again this week. (Last week I had a guildie–a rare occurence in my moribund guild–help me with Yogg-Saron zero keepers. But we somehow didn’t get the Kologarn achievement, so try try again.)

It’s kind of weird. I’ve been at > 190 mounts for months, and been grinding soloable raids and heroics with mounts I don’t have, but haven’t scored any since before the summer. I never considered the possibility that doing the Isle of Giants would give me two mounts in relatively quick order.

Now I’m at 197/200, with one more guaranteed (I just have to grind out enough dino bones) and one more damn-near guaranteed (because Primal Eggs will continue to drop*, and one of them will eventually be the Red Primal). And then the Ulduar 10 meta, with its mount, because I can’t screw up Disarmed EVERY TIME I TRY IT.

I guess I’d given up hope, although I’m too stubborn to stop trying, but now it seems I’m actually very close to Mount Parade, and I’ll probably get it before WoD goes live (my personal goal).

*Primal Eggs have always been depicted as a fairly rare drop, but I’ve literally had to abandon half a dozen on dead dinosaurs because I was already carrying one, so I feel good about the likelihood of continuing to get more eggs until I get the raptor I can use.

So on this Mount Parade achievement - people are getting 200 mounts by getting all the horde-side and alliance-side faction mounts, right? I don’t have any horde toons that are “old enough to drive” but I guess I might start looking into starting one.

I am tantalizingly close to getting the Glory of the Icecrown Raider 25 achievement and the Icebound Frostbrood drake to go along with it. (Oh please, please, let me find a decent group of non-morons this weekend!) I only need Portal Jockey and Once Bitten Twice Shy now.

The rules going into that achievement are kind of complicated, but regarding other-faction mounts, no, not really. If, say, your Alliance toon has every Alliance faction mount possible, the Horde ones don’t count. It’s whichever faction has more mounts, for the account-level achievement.

Same with Argent Tournament faction mounts. If my horde toon has ground out all 10 (I think) Argent Tournament faction mounts, the Alliance side toon is pre-empted.

There are a few possibilities:

A toon with access to class mounts increases the account total by the number of mounts they know. That means that warlocks and paladins, after they learn the basic and faster versions of their mounts, bump the total by two. But both a lock and a paladin don’t bump it up by four, total; each knows two, and that’s all you get credit for.

(Actually, a paladin get get a third class-specific mount from the Argent Tournament. For me, my Sunwalker Tauren has the highest individual count.)

Imagine a big ol’ list of every mount available in the game. On a character-by-character basis, check off all the mounts known to a particular character and total up the number. Clear the list after each character.

The largest number is the number towards your achievement.

This is a Wowhead guide for getting the mount achievements. It’s pretty good, but confusing at times. I find that the main value is in reminding me where there are exotic but easy-to-get mounts I forgot about. (Such as, I have an alt in a Alliance guild on a completely different server than my Horde main. Whereas my Horde toons are all in dead guilds, this Nelf mage is in an awesome vibrant guild. Of course, that isn’t important to me personally, since I’m a terrible selfish antisocial bastard, but I could buy some guild achievement related mounts that are available to every toon on my account, regardless of faction or server. So score! And the guide made me remember that fact.)

I would recommend Simplearmory for getting a quick overview of which mounts you have and which you are missing. It also does it for pets and achievements.

Personally I think Mount Parade is a heck of an achievement, and 197 is getting really, really close! Update us if you make progress?

I was midway into grinding the ToC mounts (I have two) when I quit playing WOW in 2008. The thought of starting up that grind again is repellent. The 100 mount achievement is certainly more doable now than it used to be, though.

That site is AWESOME. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ve got it bookmarked now, because it has all the stuff Armory has, but more concisely, and stuff that’s not visible in Armory (like mounts and pets).

Thanks for the encouragement. I’m at 198, now: I managed to clear the Ulduar 10-man meta achievement and got the Rusted Proto-Drake.

There are definitely more mounts than there used to be, and many of the new ones are less comparatively difficult to obtain than old ones were, so I agree that each of the mount count achievements are more doable. Even though, alas, some of them are very grindy.

On some rational level, though, the lazy efficiency-minded part of me is mad at the completionist “gotta catch 'em all” part of me. A lot of the mounts you acquire in the course of doing the achievements are land-only mounts, and in the current game they really get a lot less use than any flying mount. I supposed in WoD, when we’re all stuck on the ground again, we’ll get more use out of the ground mounts, but for now they’re mostly a car collection sitting in a barn for me.

Wow, just two more to go! A guy in my guild is sitting at ONE more mount, and we’re all on pins and needles for him.

Are you grinding for any particular ones, or hoping for drops? Which ones are you setting your sights on for the final two?

Why isn’t my main’s server on that one? Or does that have something to do with merging realms?

Weekly shots at solo-able raids with mount drops (Tempest Keep: The Eye, Onyxia’s Lair, Vault of Archavon), and almost daily runs at the last soloable heroic boss that drops a mount I don’t have: Priestess Kilnara in Zul’Gurub (Zulian Panther). Periodic shots at Rivendare’s Deathcharger from Stratholme, but it takes so long to get to the boss fight I get bored before a couple of runs in a row.

No joy in a few months, although I had a fair run of luck before then, getting both mounts from The Nexus: Eye of Eternity (Malygos) and the rest of the Cataclysm heroics mounts.

That’s the extent of grinding, other than farming dinosaur bones on Isle of Giants. That’s a good way to pass the time while on LFR queue, and I like it compared to the other because effort directly translates into advancement toward the goal (the more dinos I kill, the closer I get to 9,999 bones I need to buy the mount.)

As opposed to RNG, which laughs at effort and gestures rudely to committment.

Forgot to answer this one, sorry.

One of the two I’m pretty much counting on is the Bone-White Primal Raptor, which is purchased from a vendor on the Isle of Giants for just about 10,000 dinosaur bones. Dino bones are a guaranteed drop from all the dinos on the island, so ultimately if you work at it hard enough and long enough, you’ll have the currency you need to buy it. No RNG at all.

If I can farm enough gold in the process of playing, I want to build the 2nd engineering mount from MoP: Depleted-Kyparium Rocket. I already have the other (Geosynchronous World Spinner). The gold is to acquire the three gold-sink items needed to build the mount. That’d be 54,000 GP at my main’s current discounts. I’m getting there, but a long ways off. I don’t know if I can get that much gold together before WoD drops.

The rest is RNG, like the raids I mentioned earlier or the chance of a Primal Egg dropping during dino grinding and then that egg hatching into the Red Primal Raptor, which is the only one I don’t have of the three egg-based ones. Last egg I had hatched into a dupe.

Or else getting past Hexos in the Brawler’s Guild and getting to Rank 10. But I hate that “fight” and will probably boycott it until after they make Hexos optional, which I think they’re planning to do in WoD.

Without knowing which server that is, it’s kind of hard to answer(though I probably wouldn’t know anyway).

Speaking of mounts, I’ve been running Coren Direbrew on a bunch of alts, and after getting the Brewfest Ram(that I got last year) two days in a row(!), I finally got the kodo too, which makes me a happy panda(ren).

Now I’m just hoping I can have the same luck with the Headless Horseman in a few weeks.

The first year that the brewfest mounts were available I did that fight with Coren Direbrew as many times as humanly possible in 2 weeks and never got either mount. Saw them both drop a couple times, but never got the roll. Now of course they come in the prize barrel, at about a 4% drop for each. I believe it’s technically possible to get them BOTH in the same barrel, even. Not that I would ever be so lucky.

I’ve done the Direbrew fight the last 3 days and no mount so far. :-\

I did the Halloween fight in the Scarlet Monastery graveyard as many times as possible and never even SAW the mount drop.

Still no Brewfest mounts for me, even though I’ve done the fight ever day.

I did, however, get Exalted with Gilneas and Tushui Pandaren, so that was 14 new mounts for my collection, which puts me at 95.

I’ve been chasing that damn flying horse for years with no luck. I’ve leveled one more 90 than I had last year, and I’m working on another that may not get there in time, but when the Horseman event starts, I’ll have at least 5 shots per day at it this year.

Well, as of yesterday, my human paladin, nelf priest, draenei warrior, human rogue, nelf hunter, tauren paladin, and orc rogue are all equipped in full sets of Grievious Gladiator PvP gear (iLvl 522), and each also has equipped one piece of Prideful Gladiator (iLvl 550) gear. All earned entirely via PvP dailies

Also, I have both Brewfest Mounts and the Headless Horseman’s mount.
