Bjarni has been sent. Waiting to hear back from our skald-to-be, and I have the rune-priest to draw up.
Please excuse me diving in here, but I have good news.
A 1st level Wizard always grabs Sleep (Evocation), because it knocks out (no saving throw!) a bunch of goblins or orcs.
However the spell has a clear limit - it only works 50% of the time on one Ogre.
Now I can assure you that my Berserker can take 2 Ogres all by himself, so our party doesn’t need Sleep any more.
Colour Spray (1st level Alteration), on the other hand does work against any level of creature.
Also a 4th level MU casting it would not allow creatures up to 4th level a saving throw! He could cast it against a Giant - it has a good chance to work.
Next come more wonderful spells:
-
Phantom Armour (1st level Alteration / Illusion) gives unarmoured party members magicallly light Plate Mail
This is easily the best possible spell for Wizards and Berserkers. We all protect ourselves (Berserkers aren’t allowed normal armour, but can probably use this*) and can move at full speed and you can cast spells whilst wearing it!
-
Change Self (1st level Illusion / Phantasm) means you can disguise yourself, either for protection or to infiltrate somewhere
-
Phantasmal Force (1st level Illusion / Phantasm) is a flexible spell that deceives the opposition
-
Alter Self (2nd level Alteration / Illusion) does all that Change Self can do, but adds the ability to Fly or Breathe Underwater
-
Improved Phantasmal Force (2nd level Illusion / Phantasm) is a flexible spell that deceives the opposition and can really inflict damage
-
Blindness (2nd level Illusion / Phantasm) can take out an opponent of any level and cannot be removed by Cure Blindness
-
Invisiblity (2nd level Illusion / Phantasm) needs no introduction
P.S. I admit I don’t know what Transmutation spells there are
P.P.S. Malacandra, can Berserkers use this spell?
(Transmutation is Alteration by another name).
Phantom Armour? We’ll discuss that when it turns up in the campaign. Up to now no-one seems to know it
Oh, come on… … this makes a huge difference to Berserking! …
does it work?!
And received. Thanks.
Come now, my good fellow, what’s with this keen interest in the secrets of another profession? Did they do MT331 - Magical Theory (Protective Spells) at berserker school? I think not.
ooh. I see much better now.
I was picturing “Color spray” as just that. I wave my hands and spray paint at people. Perhaps good if wanted to join the artistic pop culture scene of the 1980’s, but not so good back in the days of Viking lore. Unless I meet a bunch of Celts and they all needed to quickly get dressed in Blue war paint or something.
Good to see it’s not what I was thinking of.
Well it looks like we’re close to starting up. I’m guessing it will be a new thread like the others any ideas when you’ll be starting it?
Within a few days. Waiting on Little Plastic Ninja at the moment, and I still have to work out the Rune-Priest’s stats. There will indeed be a new thread.
Good luck and have fun everyone. I plan to be following the Valiant Viking Voyage.
I can picture Ulf with his nose pressed against the window of Wizard School - probably hoping to be asked to teach them all their one weapon…
Anyone care to tell me the difference between: “Dancing lights”, “Flare” and “Torchlight”?
Because apparently my little Wizard seems to really like having all three of those in his skill sets. So if there’s ANY darkness, looks like my dude will have that covered!
Dancing Lights - To create the appearance of some little balls of light, typically as a distraction - they can look like either the lights carried by a group of people, or ball lightning, or even a strange eldritch creature made of light. Harmless in any case.
Flare - Quick burst of light to dazzle someone, or use as a signal
Torchlight - General-purpose illumination, i.e. to see where you are going. That’s “torch” as in “burning brand”, not “flashlight”, of course.
Any of these set things on fire?
I’m thinking no.
No. They’re all cantrips - zero-level spells. You don’t get magic less powerful than that. You actually have to use real, live magic to burn things - first-level spells or higher.
ETA: I see from the medieval setup thread that Little Plastic Ninja is busy at the moment, so we’ll start without the skald, once I get the rune-priest sent out we’ll be ready to rumble. The skald can always join in a little later.
Mmkay, since we’re starting up soon. What times work best? I’ve been trying to figure out your British Time Zone difference and mine, but then sometimes I don’t find the others.
I’m here 11pm-1am EST, which is moot for the Brits as that’s going up to 5am, and I don’t think you keep such hours. So when are you all normally online, and I’ll try to get on in the afternoons to co-ordinate myself. Though I’m getting used to writing Mal emails at night, and just waking up to a response.
That’s probably about how the thread will work- everyone posts their decisions, and the DM advances the game about once a day.
Well normal Brits are not up at 5am, but I’m just posting this before going to bed.
(I’m on holiday for a couple of weeks and enjoying myself!
This is why I can never keep track you crazy Brits!
