** Victory! **
OK, having got the Berserker bloodlust out of the way, could I make some calm suggestions?
DM,
please could you post a list of character names and classes.
Fellow Vikings,
Unlike face-to-face roleplaying, we haven’t met and discussed things in depth before starting. We probably have wildly varying experience (e.g. I’ve played 1st Edition a lot, but have never even seen a Viking rulebook).
So how about a brief statement of your character (including what spells you intend to load?)
(If any spellcasters would like advice, I have played both Priests and Wizards before.)
I’m not trying to spoil any surprises, but I think we need to work closely as a team (e.g. not duplicating abilities, nor blundering into each other’s plans ).
I’ll start:
Ulf Andersson is a Berserker, who loves Axes.
His Poleaxe (two handed) does the most damage, especially against heavily armoured opponents.
His Battle Axe has two blades (one for magical opponents  ).
His Hand Axe is for cramped conditions.
He reveres Bears and has a Bear Cloak.
When in Berserker rage, he is completely fearless (normally he’s just fearless!) . He seems invulnerable, but at the end of his rage he may collapse, apparently dead. If this happens, try not to abandon him.
He is pleased to fight alongside Fighters and other Berserkers. He likes the Rune-Priest because of their healing and protection. He doesn’t want to scout, but is content if the Thief does so. He doesn’t understand Wizards, but will see if they can help him.
Note that the thief is currently invisible
Spells emailed to You.
That’s the kind of thief we need!
…but strangely uncommunicative.
Got 'em.
Fair enough, Glee. Here is my guy:
Osvald is a Wizard, who specializes in Evocations.
He possesses a Long Spear (2 handed?), but does not so much as wield it powerfully, but rather tends to slouch against it, as if it were a walking stick supporting him.
He possess a wand given to him as a gift from his Wizarding Academy, but he has yet to use it. It contains 10 random effects within it, able to be used by anyone.
He carries a Cloak of Protection.
Osvald likes Dogs and Wolves, and has a natural curiosity towards learning about the world, and especially in the realm of science and magic arts.
Osvald possesses powerful spells, but has never harmfully used anything against another human being. The pursuit of knowledge is what drives him to learn these powerful spells.
He is quite naive about the world and Viking and human affairs, having spent most of his time locked away in his studies.
Osvald’s secret goal in life is to find an attractive woman who understands the constant rigors of the lifestyle that a pursuit of knowledge and Magic entails, for he wants to raise a family, while still being able to be free to pursue his studies further. Most Viking Women do not care for such a lifestyle, Osvald is discovering.
Osvald thusly does not believe in a short violent and exciting existence, but rather trying to live as LONG as possible by any means possible. But he is inherently loyal to his allies.
Today he has loaded up:
Much appreciated, and Ulf is happy to fight in front of you.
His ambition is to find a woman - any woman!
I think it’s great that Detect Magic is a cantrip - can you cast it more than once per day? It’s marvellous for spotting traps, enemies with spells on (e.g. Invisibility) and magic treasure!
Very sensible to have Shield and Mirror Image - keep yourself protected. The Berserker style is to keep attacking, not to worry too much about what’s behind him. This also means I rely on you not to catch me in the area effect of Colour Spray, Flaming Sphere and Web!
Ah, I’ll have to keep that in mind. Right now I doubled up on the Flares just because I realize they can blind people. And should I get lost, i can always signal for help.
The prestidigitations or what not, is just there for amusement, as it’s Day 1, and if I have free time, I could always just play around with it. What’s its ACTUAL use?
My only reference to cantrips is Unearthed Arcana, which doesn’t seem to have Flare or Presdigitation. (It’s got Palm, which allows you to pick something up discreetly.)
Dancing Lights and Detect Magic are usually 1st level spells, so that’s very useful.
My roleplaying group never brought cantrips in, but these seem mildly useful:
Jorund is a berserker who doesn’t like the sight of blood and so loves him some hammers. He’s got a silver hammer and a cold-forged iron hammer as well as a couple of throwing hammers and he can dual-wield them. He’s got a lightening fetish and wears a storm cloak. He would prefer to be left alone so that he can drink and be at peace. He hates people who are violent so prefers the company of rune-priests.
Thanks!
Flare lets you pop off a bright light. If cast in someone’s face it may dazzle them for a round or two. Prestidigitation lets you perform the kind of sleight-of-hand that you might use to amuse someone, or light housekeeping tasks, maybe shining, polishing, sweeping, that kind of thing - minor effects over the course of an hour.
" Wouldn’t… squishing people… Make gooey bloody bits come out of them?"
Osvald clearly has much to learn from the way Jorund thinks.
Fascinating!
Or pickpocketing, if you’re inclined.
Just sayin’…
Nevermore ask about ravens…
(It just had to be said).
Ivar, a Rune-Priest of Odin, is armed with a spear, a spear-thrower, and several javelins. He accepts that violence is occasionally necessary, but generally prefers to solve things through cleverness or diplomacy.
This morning, he loaded:
2x Torchlight, 1x Mending, 1x Read Magic, 1x Purify Food or Drink
3x Cure Light Wounds, 1x Command, 1x Remove Fear
1x Cure Moderate Wounds, 1x Dispel Magic
And can spontaneously cast “Detect” spells, Guidance, Comprehend Languages, Augury, ESP, and Locate Object.
Thanks for posting that.
As you are our only healer, I hope you won’t mind if I ask if you could load more cures…
Well there is a reason that he is “the simple”, broken bones or turning people into guey puddles doesnt mean pain just those cuts and the bright red stuff.
