Morels in about two weeks Wisconsin

Having checked the woods, and the plant developement, I give Wisconsin two to three weeks for Morels galore. We’re getting the needed moisture at the critical times, for good morel production. My favorite time of the year coming up.

Missed out on taking a picture of a 2.5 foot sized mud turtle laying eggs. The camera was in my car, I was in somebody elses vehicle.

Yum yum, they’re almost ready here in N. Idaho too! We don’t ususally start looking until around Mothers Day. I love that first omelet filled with morels.

I’m glad I live in a state where we have high ethical standards year-round.

Peace,

The other day here in central WI, Mr. S was riding his bike past a little inlet. On the other side was a large log with a whole row of little turtles on it. As he went by, he must have startled them, as they dived in sequence into the water, just like a row of synchronized swimmers entering the pool, one by one.

April showers bring May flowers… lessee, out in the woods we have:
[ul][li]Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot)[/li][li]Uvularia fulvus (nodding bellwort)[/li][li]Dicentra cucullaria (Dutchmans breeches)[/li][li]Hepatica triloba (liverwort)[/li][li]Anemonella thalictroides (rue anemone)[/li][li]Viola lobata (yellow wood violet)[/li][/ul]all in glorious bloom.

They’re here!! The kids and I went out and found a big bag full this afternoon. Good grits tonite.

The asparagus is up today for picking. The plum trees can be smelled everywhere. The apple and flowering crabs are starting their bloom now. There has been some rain every day for four days now, clearing out the really large amount of pollen. I found flowering Yellow Wood Violets, Birds Foot Violets, Wild Oats, Butter Cups, Rue Anemone, False Rue Anemone, Marsh Marigolds, and Sassafras that makes the whole area smell like Anise or some real root beer. Some lilacs are in bloom also.

The Showy Orchis should be open in a couple weeks, along with the Jack In The Pulpits, and May Apples. Tomorrow I’ll go check the earlier Morel locations just in case, tough I’m sure nothing will be there.

The Sandhill Cranes have pretty much paired off and staked out their turf. The ducks have done the same. The frogs are stopping their deafening roar.
