It’s been about three weeks since Bob Edwards got his walking papers from “Morning Edition.” Have you noticed any difference? Is it better, worse or pretty much the same.
I am a bit uncomfortable with it - not markedly so, but I feel it is something of a step down. Still, it might grow on me.
I don’t see any sort of improvement or advantage that the new hosts bring to the show. All they’ve done is move from an extremely distintive and recognizable voice to two relatively average voices. Certainly nothing that couldn’t have waited until after Bob’s 25th anniversary.
I sorta suspect there’s something behind the scenes we don’t know about…
I miss Bob! I even miss the strident horn section theme music. I have hardly listened since the changeover. I joined in the pre-changeover letter writing campaign.
There was an editorial by ___________ – shit, I’m drawing a blank on her name, quite famous, did Maxwell House commericals years ago, survived breast cancer … anyway, this person did an editorial about how it was really ageism that forced Bob Edwards out. I can believe it.
Who’s the main substitute now? Steve Innskeep, I think it is … don’t like him at all. His voice is too high. Sounds local, too.
I’ll be the voice of opposition here - I haven’t really noticed that much of a difference. 'Course, I generally pay attention more to my local NPR host (Greta! You rock!) than the nationals.
I’ll say this - I never really cared for the way Bob interviewed people. To me, he sounded like he was reading the questions flat, off a card. No inflection, no interest. Didn’t really care for that.

Yeah, I miss Bob too. When he’d go on his extended vacations and they’d bring in the subs, I’d get through by telling myself that he’d be back eventually. Well, he’s not coming back now, and I’m having trouble dealing with it. A friend of mine flamed me for not being able to adapt to the change, but I think he’s still bitter that Ray Suarez jumped ship for PBS.
It came to me in a flash this morning; Linda Ellerbee.
Wanted to mention also: Carl Castle (Karl Kassel? I dunno) is a semi-acceptable replacement for Bob Edwards. Innskeep needs to get right off the air, though.
