I was only mildly entertained by his last album (“Let Me Kiss You” was the only stand out for me; the rest was just OK). This new single is sounding pretty good though. I think I’m already liking it better than anything on Quarry. Pretty classic Morrissey sound - 99% him and 1% music, maudlin lyrics, etc.
Check it out (full preview) at the old man’s MySpace site. Yes, Morrissey has a myspace page. You can download it at iTunes - and probably the other services too.
Anyone know what the non-English words are in the song? Sounds like either character names from something? Or Italian?
I love Morrissey, and got to see him live (for the first time) on his Fall 2004 “You Are the Quarry” tour. I will definitely keep an eye out for this album, but I’ll probably wait until BMG Music Service gets it in stock.
I’m a Smiths fan checking in. I had no idea that Morrissey was still making records. I thought he’d retired to peanut butter and banana sandwiches, like one of his idols. I hope the best for him, although I’ve always secretly wished his solo career would bust so that The Smiths could possibly re-band.
One of the oddest songs I’ve heard recently was a remix of Morrissey’s Suedehead by Sparks (as in This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us). It turns it into a bizarre orchestral epic.
Great song!
It does remind me of his last album (which I really liked) but it also reminds me a little of the Smiths. I think it’s the catchiness of the melody.
Bwa ha ha!
It would have been better if he didn’t add anyone so it would say “Morrissey has 0 friends”. He does have an image to keep up.
I’m not sure that he will reunite with Johnny Marr. I’ve read interviews where he said he’s not against it, but he’s not in a hurry because he has the rest of his life. I think Marr needs the reunion more, nowadays his talents are being squandered playing with Oasis. And did anyone of you hear his own band’s album? It sucked.
But his other side projects are still great.
Actually, I think Andy Rourke poses more of a problem for a Smiths reunion than Marr - IIRC, there was all kinds of litigation involving The Smiths that was instigated by Rourke, and Morrissey bitched about it in every (somewhat) recent interview I’ve read.
Thanks for the tip on the new album - I thought You Are The Quarry was a nice return to form, and I’m anxious to hear this new one.
He’ll take anyone who asks. But it’s still kind of neat to be puttering around on your MySpace site, and suddenly see that Morrissey has logged on, and added you to his friends list. Because then, you can say, with honesty, “Morrissey just added me to his friends list.” What could be cooler than being able to deliver that line, and it be the truth?
He’s the only one in mine. Well, him and some guy named Tom. I don’t know who Tom is. He just appeared.
There’s an article in the last issue of Uncut about the Smiths – actually it’s a huge interview with Marr, Rourke, and Joyce – and they mention the unlikelihood of a reunion. I’ll see if I can post relevant paragraphs later…
I recently bought The Best of Morrissey (because I don’t have Vauxhall and I on CD and was desperate to hear “Now My Heart Is Full”), and my God! The horribly, shamefully, nauseatingly sycophantic liner notes! I swear, I’ve never read anything so cloying and fawning in my life, and I like Morrissey as much as the next guy (well, probably more, considering who the next guy usually is). The writer actually says “One day there will most probably be a Faculty of Morrissey Studies in more than one distinguished seat of learning…” and then goes on to predict that Morrissey, of course, would never deign to comment on the work that goes on there because that would be beneath him. Seriously, Faculty of Morrissey Studies?! I rolled my eyes so hard at that one, I nearly lost my contacts in my skull.
That said, I love the guy. Not as much as Trouble loves him, I’m guessing, but close.
Ringleader of the Tormentors comes out in April, FYI.
Tom huh? Someone should tell him that ground control is looking for him.
Gallow’s Fodder, those liner notes do look pretty bad. I do think Morrissey should publish a book of his lyrics, like Lou Reed did. I’d totally buy it.
