Motherboard dead? Althlon socket type?

I’ve got a PC that’s about two years old. My wife came home and said it was making a steady beeping sound. She turned it off and now it won’t come back up. I suspected a dead power supply (this one was pretty cheap) and I just replaced it.

No dice.

There isn’t a peep out of it. I have a red pilot light on the motherboard near the power connector and that’s it. The only sign of life. No beep codes, no nothin’.

I suspect, therefore, a dead MB. Concur?

It’s an ABIT KN9S board, it has an AM2 type socket on it. I’ve got a AMD A64 X2 4600+ CPU. Will this work in any AM2 type motherboard?

Any other suggestions? Dump both MB & CPU? For what?

Dang - my wife is gonna be annoyed that this machine is dead - she’s taking an online college class. This is the wrong time for CompUSA & all those other guys to be dead. Not any big box stores left in Denver that carry components.

Reseat the processor and the ram. Remove any pci cards, just have the bare minimum. See if you get any beep codes.

>and I just replaced it.

Did you remember to plug in both the main power cable and the little 6 pin power cable too?

I had my Asus MB die not too long ago – I believe I have the same CPU (if you have an athlon x2 socket 939). From what I could figure out when looking for a replacement board, AM2 MBs are backwards compatible (i.e., they take 754, 939, and AM2).

I’d suggest getting a more authoratative confirmation on that, as I just bought the same make/model MB used. But if you had it in an AM2 MB, it should work in any other one. But first, take HorseloverFat’s advice.

That statement is incorrect. Socket 754 chips & Socket 939 chips will NOT work in a Socket AM2 board - the memory controller built into Socket 754 & 939 chips only work with DDR1 memory, not the DDR2 RAM used in AM2 motherboards. He must have a Socket AM2 4600+, not a Socket 939 4600+.

Any Socket AM2 or AM2+ board will work just fine with your chip. If you purchased the same exact board, it would be a drop-replacement. This site has that board, and is the cheapest I could find with a quick search on Google. If you used a different board, chance are Windows will want to be reinstalled. The main advantage in getting a newer board, is that the newer Socket AM2+ boards will work with one of the Phenom or Phenom II triple or quad cores, if you need more CPU power in the future.

Thanks.

I just ordered an ASUS M3A78 board. The risk of having to reinstall windows isn’t as big a negative as having the positive ability to really upgrade the chip. I’ve got good backups, too. My DDR2/667 RAM is a bit slow these days but is supported on this board.

The fan on my video card was welded tight with crud and the caps were bulging. I ordered a new Geforce 9800 gtx, too. A new chip & some faster memory later and this’ll be a whole new machine.

Reseated the RAM, removed the video card (only card I had). Yeah, I remembered the little power connector, too. Didn’t reseat the CPU - I’ve got a big cooler fastened on top and really didn’t want to mess with that arrangement. Thanks.

Thank you for the correction. I’m glad I added the bit about finding a more authoritative confirmation.
