I’m running Windows 7-64-bit, and as I’m surfing the net, watching AVI’s etc, sometimes the mouse cursor will freeze for about 3-5 seconds, then Windows will make a sound like it’s done something (a quick “dun-da” sound), and my mouse will work again. I’m using a G5 with no Logitech software, just whatever Windows installs automatically for it. It’s worked fine for the 11 months since I did my last Windows install, which is when I upgraded my CPU/memory/motherboard/HD.
I’ve rebooted the computer, and deleted the driver, which is just the driver Windows assigns for it when it discovers it. Neither helped. I haven’t installed any other mouse software or drivers.
When it freezes and recovers, the mouse changes it’s DPI settings, so I have to hit the DPI button on the mouse to change it back to how I like it. Maybe it’s losing the device and reloading the driver again? Maybe the driver’s crashing and reloading? Could the mouse just be going bad, and I need to replace it? It’s about 3 years old, and gets a lot of use, but it’s not abused. I’ll get a new mouse if I need it, but would rather not spend the money if that’s why I’m having a problem.
Logitech G5
Win7 64-bit
GIGABYTE GA-Z68P-DS3 motherboard
8 gig RAM
Intel i5-2500k, no overclocking
Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 (soon to be upgraded, I hope)
If so, try what bradministrator said (different USB port) but also check the mouse cable itself for frays, especially at either end of the cord, and if you’re using a USB hub, check that too.
Can’t get that link to work, but yeah, I think it IS the ‘device plugged in’ sound. I’m going to try another USB port. If it continues, maybe a new mouse is in order. Maybe that Razor Naga I’ve been oogling.
Thanks for the reply, Reply (BTW, that’s either the best or worst username ever, I haven’t decided ). Thanks, Bradministrator, for sharing your experience. I wouldn’t want to buy a new mouse if it didn’t help. Now that I know this sometimes happens to mice, if everything else I try fails, it’s possible the mouse is at fault.
Never had this happen before, and I’ve been using mice since the Amiga 1000 days. Mice would wear down, but I’ve never had one act like this, nor heard of a friend having similar issues.
And one other guess: If you’re using a USB hub, are there a lot of devices connected to it? Or a USB hard drive (not flash drive)?
Sometimes one power-hungry device on a hub (such a hard drive spinning up) can starve the others of power, causing a momentary USB brownout. It doesn’t happen often but I’ve seen it happen before.
