What's with my mouse freezing up?

I had a Logitech optical mouse connected via USB. I started having problems with the driver loading on startup, i.e., I was unable to move the mouse pointer. Usually a reboot or two would solve the problem. I downloaded the newest drivers, but still had the same problem.

I thought maybe XP just doesn’t like Logitech, so I went out and bought a Microsoft optical mouse and connected to a USB port. I’m having the same problems, with an additional glitch: when the screen goes into powersave for more than a few minutes, the mouse goes dead. I hit a keyboard key, and the screen comes back up and the mouse operates. Until the last time. Frozen like last year’s salmon.

Any thoughts on how to debug this? Thanks.

One bump. Somebody must have a clue.

Sounds to me like a hardware problem, get the latest drivers for the USB port for your computer-motherboard, if you still continue having the same problems consider getting an internal USB card.
