What is wrong with my mouse/mouse driver?

I’m writing this without the benefit of a mouse. For the past week, the mouse cursor has been freezing on screen for a few seconds, then proceeding to work normally. Sometimes it beeped when it stopped working, sometimes not.
Then, today, it stopped working completely. I’m tempted to write this off as a broken mouse, but the beeping from the computer threw me off. Would the computer (system speaker, not external) be beeping about it if it were just a broken mouse?
Please help me, as this is extremely frustrating.

Assuming there’s nothing else changed in the past week (new hardware or software), my guess would be a damaged connectino between the mouse and the computer, particularly if it’s a PS2 connection - some computer will freeze entirely if the PS2 mouse is disconnected, maybe yours is beeping to warn of this error. On the other hand, if it’s a USB mouse, I’ve no idea

A good way to tell if it is in fact a hw problem with the mouse itself would be to try connecting the mouse in question to a different computer. If it works fine, then it’s not the mouse itself.

GorillaMan has a good point about the connection of the mouse to the computer. Is your mouse connecting via a PS/2 connector or is it USB? IF it’s USB, you can try plugging it into a different USB plug.

It’s a PS/2 mouse.
I just did a cold reboot and the mouse has begun to work again. Does this give any more clues as to my problem?
