Recently my wife’s PC started having issues with her mouse. It would just lock up and after a minute or two would just come back. Sometimes it doesn’t come back and she reboots. Then it’s fine for a while. My wife used my PC today, and now my mouse is having trouble. It isn’t working at all. Has anyone seen anything that could be like a virus related to mice? The only thing we have used in common is SDMB. Thanks.
Please see thisregarding “The Mouse Problem.”
Great thread title/OP combination, BTW.
So the Mouse is acting Goofy.
Sometimes the CPU can be overwhelmed temporarily, freezing all input. This happens to me when my antivirus is scanning for instance. Can you alt+tab switch window focus during these times? That could indicate that the problem is not just with the mouse. If you are noticing a lot of disk activity this is another sign.
Have you tried temporarily replacing the mouse with a different one and seeing if the problem persists?
Is the keyboard useable during these mouse lock ups?
Does the mouse require special drivers? Maybe your mouse driver’s been corrupted.
I’d also vote for trying a different mouse and seeing what happens. If the same thing happens after switching the mouse, then you know its with the mouse driver or a virus. Also you might trying the problem mouse on a different pc and see what happens.
The next time the mouse freezes, try unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in. That might help.
Sounds like a hardware issue, though. Optical mice can be had for $10, so shop around at your local computer store. (Not a big box store!!)
