Movie scene that freaked you out the most?

Oh my God yes- I was coming back to post about it! Luckily, just about all of the scenes involving torture are telegraphed so far in advance that you have plenty of time to hide behind the couch…

At this very moment I am re-watching *Straw Dogs * (which I had seen a long time ago as a kid) and I just saw Dustin Hoffman hit that guy in the face with the giant mousetrap (do those things actually exist in real life?) and it’s fucking horrific. Especially when the guy struggles for a few seconds to get it off of his head before he dies.

The Deer Hunter, where the POWs are forced to play russian roulette.

I just remembered another scene in a movie that absolutely freaks me out:

“Is it safe?”

Lawrence Olivier in “Marathon Man”. Absolutely horrifying scene. Especially if you don’t like dentists, which I don’t. I am a rabid anti-dentite.

I was flipping through channels early one morning (this was several years ago), and I came across Lord of the Flies. I’d never seen the movie, didn’t know what it was about, so I let it play for a few minutes.

The scene was the one where they drop that huge boulder on Piggy’s head. I was completely freaked out by the cold-blooded manner of the boys who did it, and also by the sight of Piggy lying there with bloody face and staring eyes.

I was shaking so hard that it was more like spasms than trembling and I had a hard time holding the remote firmly enough to change the channel. Needless to say, I’ve never had the desire to watch the whole movie.

I completely forgot about this one - I agree. I was also squicked out by jude Law getting the oar to the head in The Talented Mr Ripley . Just the stunned look right before his head opens up.

I have a strong stomach here, and have enjoyed many a scary movie. The only time that I have ever walked out of a theater was during the scene in the motel bathroom in “Scarface”. The chainsaw revs. The body jumps.

It still gets to me.

Yeah, they do. It’s a bear trap. Scary shit.

The twin girls in The Shining.

Ophelia waking the Pale Man up in Pan’s Labyrinth.

The ghost boy looking through the keyhole of the cupboard in **The Devil’s Backbone. **

Nah - waiting for the Pale Man to wake up.

I totally agree. There was so much suspense leading up to that moment that it was almost a relief when he finally woke up.

Two words…

Large Marge.

They kept toying with you and moving the camera around a little bit so you couldn’t tell if he had moved in the background or if she was just between you and him. When we came home I had to make a pan of brownies and watch a Scrubs DVD before I went to bed.

The reveal of the creature in The Descent. Visually beautiful and a total surprise. The entire theatre freaked out. Nothing has made me jump that much since the previously mentioned draped hospital figure in The Exorcist III.

When the alien in **Signs ** walks into the shot during the “Birthday party video”

Oh, good one.

I wasn’t really that into the movie as a whole, but that scene is gold!

If “freaked out” means “scared” or “startled,” nothing quite competes with the scene in Jaws where they’re diving down to the wrecked boat and the face floats out. Yow. I was a teenager when that came out, and the girl I was dating actually left bloody fingernail marks in my arm when that happened.

If “freaked out” means “totally repulsed,” then why has nobody mentioned Caligula?

Although the Exorcist backwards crabwalk on the stairs still makes me squirm.

The opening sequence from Saving Private Ryan, particularly the first guy to get shot in the head in the boat going ashore. It just blew my mind - one minute, he’s a human being with a full history and all kinds of plans for what to do next. And then in a flash he’s done. No more discussion.

Bingo. Made me feel sick. No problem now, but when I first saw it…

When I was small, I was scared of nothing like I was scared of THE BANSHEE from

Darby O’Gill and the Little People.

She had an eerie spectral effect, that painted her a ghastly lumescent bluey-green.

I couldnt sleep for YEARS.
Flash forward, and I’m a grown man sitting in the cinema watching the Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. And Frodo offers the ring to Galadrial…

And she turns into, inmy eyes, The Banshee from Darby O’Gill.

Her voice goes into that harsh, booming “all those shall gaze upon me” speech, and I dropped what was left of my popcorn… In my mid twenties, I covered my face with my hands and seriously considered running out. It really did a number on me. I cant even watch that scene on TV anymore.
