In watching a promo for the Rock’s action flick The Rundown, it ocurred to me that it starred three former Saturday Night Live hosts: Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, and the Rock himself.
Something tells me that three SNL hosts in the same movie is not the record. Are there any, in fact, with more?
Note: SNL cast members who never hosted are specifically excluded from this count. For the record, the top five hosts (by # of appearances) are:
Home Alone has three: Macaulay Culkin, John Candy and Catherine O’Hara. I was going to include Steve Martin, but conflated this movie with Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Good ol’ John Hughes.
True Lies is another three-fer: Shwarzennegger, Tom Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Heathers: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and that girl from 90210 whose name escapes me.
Star Trek: Generations had a bunch: Shatner, Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Malcolm McDowell.
The Rolling Stones collectively hosted once, so Gimme Shelter and Ccksucker Blues* should count for four or five apiece. And the unforgivable Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band probably sets some record for number of musical hosts.
How many SNL hosts are in Coffee and Cigarettes?
TV shows that could be contenders include Friends, Cheers andSCTV.
Here’s a six-fer: Charlie’s Angels
Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore
Lucy Liu
Bill Murray
Tim Curry
Tom Green
(Plus a couple who might have been on, I just don’t remember: Crispin Glover, Luke Wilson, and Matt LeBlanc)
Include the sequel, and there’s Bruce Willis and the Olsen Twins!
I came to do Charlie Angels (D^mn your fast little arms Krokodil)
But I did have a follow-up Bowfinger it only had 5 (Until Jamie Kennedy hosts)
Steve Martin
Eddie Murphy
Heather Graham
Christine Baranski
Robert Downey jr.
Actually, according to the IMDB, Matt LeBlanc is the only Friends regular NOT to have hosted, though that’ll probably change next year when Joey hits the air.
And John Cleese at least made an extended appearance on an ep, though he wasn’t hosting…
This is fun! I haven’t turned up anything to beat a nine-fer, but I did uncover some interesting factoids. Like that the same guy who played the freaky blonde kidnapper in Fargo also played the whacked-out cosmonaut in Armageddon. Peter Stormare, I salute you!
He was also in The Big Lebowski, which I’m sure some of you will appreciate. FWIW, TBL comes in at a respectable 5 SNL hosts, plus Flea, who was on as a musical guest with the Chili Peppers.
And people I’m surprised never hosted: John Cusack, Will Smith, Dave Chappelle, Owen Wilson, Ving Rhames.
