Movie starring the most former SNL hosts (as opposed to cast)

In watching a promo for the Rock’s action flick The Rundown, it ocurred to me that it starred three former Saturday Night Live hosts: Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, and the Rock himself.

Something tells me that three SNL hosts in the same movie is not the record. Are there any, in fact, with more?

Note: SNL cast members who never hosted are specifically excluded from this count. For the record, the top five hosts (by # of appearances) are:

**Steve Martin (13)

John Goodman (12)

Alec Baldwin (12)

Buck Henry (10)

Chevy Chase (8)**

Does the movie have to post-date their first appearance as SNL host?

Good question. I’d say “no”.

To help, here’s a list of all the hosts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Saturday_Night_Live_hosts_and_musical_guests

And I see that Young Frankenstein had a SNL Host Rating of 4: Peter Boyle, Teri Garr, Gene Hackman, and Madeline Kahn.

It just occurred to me that the Christopher Guest movies (Spinal Tap, Waiing For Guffman, Best in Show, et al) should represent well in this category.

I know Catherine O’Hara and Michael McKean have hosted. Let me dig around a bit …

(I can’t believe Eugene Levy has never hosted!)

… well … maybe not, after all.

OK, the Christopher-Guest tack was fruitful after all – *This Is Spinal Tap * had eight SNL hosts:

Billy Crystal
Dana Carvey
Ed Begley, Jr.
Michael McKean
Rob Reiner
Howard Hesseman
Angelic Huston
Fred Willard

  • (researching this has suggested a new thread to me: People who should have hosted SNL, but haven’t)

I’ve got another 8-fer:

John Travolta
Bruce Willis
Sam Jackson
Quentin Tarantino
Rosanna Arquette
Steve Buscemi
Chris Walken
Harvey Keitel

Pulp Fiction, of course!

Home Alone has three: Macaulay Culkin, John Candy and Catherine O’Hara. I was going to include Steve Martin, but conflated this movie with Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Good ol’ John Hughes.

True Lies is another three-fer: Shwarzennegger, Tom Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Heathers: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and that girl from 90210 whose name escapes me.

Star Trek: Generations had a bunch: Shatner, Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Malcolm McDowell.

The Rolling Stones collectively hosted once, so Gimme Shelter and Ccksucker Blues* should count for four or five apiece. And the unforgivable Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band probably sets some record for number of musical hosts.

How many SNL hosts are in Coffee and Cigarettes?

TV shows that could be contenders include Friends, Cheers andSCTV.

Here’s a six-fer: Charlie’s Angels
Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore
Lucy Liu
Bill Murray
Tim Curry
Tom Green
(Plus a couple who might have been on, I just don’t remember: Crispin Glover, Luke Wilson, and Matt LeBlanc)
Include the sequel, and there’s Bruce Willis and the Olsen Twins!

I came to do Charlie Angels (D^mn your fast little arms Krokodil)

But I did have a follow-up Bowfinger it only had 5 (Until Jamie Kennedy hosts)
Steve Martin
Eddie Murphy
Heather Graham
Christine Baranski
Robert Downey jr.

Actually, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle pulls into the lead with nine:

Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore
Lucy Liu
Bernie Mac
Demi Moore
Carrie Fisher
Bruce Willis
Ashley Olsen
Mary-Kate Olsen

(adds John Cleese, Luke Wilson, and Eric Bogosian to personal list of shoulda-done-SNL people)

Actually, according to the IMDB, Matt LeBlanc is the only Friends regular NOT to have hosted, though that’ll probably change next year when Joey hits the air.

And John Cleese at least made an extended appearance on an ep, though he wasn’t hosting…

OK … found another niner – Amazon Women on the Moon:

Phil Hartman
Griffin Dunne
David Alan Grier
Rosanna Arquette
Steve Guttenberg
Ed Begley Jr.
Carrie Fisher
Howard Hesseman
Andrew “Dice” Clay

Only two – Steve Buscemi and Bill Murray.

This is fun! I haven’t turned up anything to beat a nine-fer, but I did uncover some interesting factoids. Like that the same guy who played the freaky blonde kidnapper in Fargo also played the whacked-out cosmonaut in Armageddon. Peter Stormare, I salute you!

He was also in The Big Lebowski, which I’m sure some of you will appreciate. FWIW, TBL comes in at a respectable 5 SNL hosts, plus Flea, who was on as a musical guest with the Chili Peppers.

And people I’m surprised never hosted: John Cusack, Will Smith, Dave Chappelle, Owen Wilson, Ving Rhames.

Heck, Little Shop of Horrors has five.

Christopher Guest
Steve Martin
Bill Murray
Rick Moranis
John Candy

I’m not sure if it quite qualifies as it is mostly pointless Cameos, but

Jay and Silent Bob ties with 9

Matt Damon
Ben Affleck
Sean WIlliam Scott
Chris Rock
George Carlin
Shannon Dougherty
Carrie Fisher
Jon Stewart
James Van Der Beek

And in the near future at least Will Farrel and maybe Tracy Morgan are sure to host SNL.

Not Christopher Guest. Little Shop of Horrors has four.

Wolfman, pointless cameos are A-OK. If you look harder at the lists above, you’ll see lots of pointless cameo roles.

Uhh…what?

Little Shop of Horrors (first customer)
Christopher Guest (#14)
