Was I the only one who laughed my ass off all the way through this?
Violent Cop and Boiling Point. They were playing in Brattle Square as a double feature in '99, and we went to see it thinking we were in for a night of John Woo-type action.
Along with Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, I’ll add A Simple Plan. I saw it the day after I saw Saving Private Ryan. It was a downer of a week.
Leaving Las Vegas. Went to see this with a friend one evening, not really knowing what it was about. Great performances, amazing movie - but the rape scene stayed with me for a really long time, and as the daughter of an alcoholic I just can’t deal with the subject matter.
Um…Yeah most likely. Even if you aren’t a Christian, from a “oh my God they did that to human beings and didn’t care??” standpoint it’s a pretty freakin brutal film.
Crash is my movie. Saw it, thought it was good, don’t really need to see again.
The Pianist, although I did end up sitting through about half of it a second time. I second Dancer in the Dark, and I think I’d add Pi. It’s probably a better movie than Requiem for a Dream anyway.
Excellent choice. I wish I hadn’t seen it the first time. Philip Seymour Hoffman will always be that guy to me, no matter how many Oscars he wins and how nice of a person he may be in real life.
Memento. An easy way to remember the spelling of Memento is that it has to do with memory. There’s no such word as “momento”; don’t know why I keep seeing that misspelling.
I came in to add Affliction. Wonderful performances, including James Coburn finally winning an Oscar. But the tragedy is just too raw and pathetic and believable.

I think that there is actually a movie called “Momento,” but I don’t know if that’s what he’s talking about.
I’ll add my vote for Life is Beautiful. Fabulous movie. I cried for a week.
And it’s why I will never watch Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan or Old Yeller. I know the stories. I simply do not want to have scenes that I know exist indelibly etched in my memory. And I probably could have blithely lived my whole life in ignorant bliss of Pan’s Labyrinth, Sophie’s Choice and We Were Soldiers.
