Anyone else have any trouble submitting VERY obscure films? You know, the ones that IMDB winds up saying, “Sorry, you must’ve dreamed that movie, retard.”
Two in particular come to mind. One was a VHS tape I picked up used in a video store going out of business sale called Mountain Lady that had a release date of 1977. It carried a very generic label with a family-friendly company tagline that read: (COMPANY NAME): Family films. No violence, no nudity, no animation. Um, WTF? Ok, then. I submitted it and it was rejected months later because I could not find ONE goddamn internet source to say this movie existed. Not ONE.
The other was a feature named Slow Bullet from 1987 or so. Another VHS tape I picked up at the same Going Out Of Business Sale. It was a shot-on-video dealy about a Vietnam vet who was going slowly insane. I managed to see an online review of the film a few years back, but I have since lost it. Damnit! I submitted it to IMDB. They said: Eat me.
One that I haven’t even bothered submitting is a film I used to see on TBS from time to time called Lil Scratch, which is a 1970s nature film about a guy that befriends a baby bear cub that played on that station in the early 1980s. There is evidence that this film exists, but…fuck it.
No – I’ve been pretty impressed by the breadth of what they do have catalogued. When I can’t find something, it’s because they have it catalogued under another title. Generally they have links to other titles, but not always.
I’ve been annoyed by clear and obvious lapses in their catalogueing. For instance, Plan Nine from Outer Space doesn’t list Bela Lugosi as appearing in it!!(They mention it in the Trivia section, but why not in the main entry?)
And if you look up Lugosi’s credits, you won’t find Plan Nine among them. This is pretty ridiculous, since it’s famously the last film he appeared in, albeit posthumously. And they don’t list him in any of their categories as being in it (as in “Archival Footage”, which could arguably be used). That’s only the most blatant example. I’ve found many cases where they’ve omitted actors from films, or not recognized sequels or remakes. (They have both “Trapped by the Mormons” and its sequel listed, but don’t observe the relationship).
My experience similar to Cal- can’t find a film, later find out I am searching the title it was given on the VHS box, and not the original title. Some movies get a new title every time they are re-released it seems.
Yep, I’ve had them refuse to list a film multiple times. Although in my case it was a direct-to-DVD release with only one person in it who otherwise had an IMDB listing. I filled out copious amounts of information and submitted it, only to have it rejected because IMDB didn’t deem it important enough to devote the resources to putting it up. I submitted it a few more times but after like the third or fourth rejection I gave up.
