Per Wiki, Westworld was also “the first feature film to use digital image processing to pixellate photography to simulate an android['s] point of view.”
Yeah, that was one of the nice touches, it added some terrific realism. There were also shots of the aircraft (a kind of modernistic intra-atmosphere spaceship) pilot’s mirror sunglasses reflecting the landscaping speeding by. Pretty sure I ate that stuff up at 13 years old.
Go in blind, not knowing a single thing about this movie. It’s a really great movie and I have to admit, it did not go exactly in the direction I thought it was going, even when I thought the movie had revealed to us what was happening. Very creative and fun, well worth a viewing.
Starting watching this last night. Figured I’d just watch a few minutes to see what the premise is. With a title like Barbarian, I was pretty sure it wasn’t going to be my type of film but it’s turning out to be really good. What a nice surprise to see Bill Skaarsgard Can’t wait to get back to it.
The screenwriter and director wrote “Barbarian” at the top of his script and then never changed it. It does take place on “Barbary” street, but otherwise, the title is just a title and has no connection to its movie. Makes it even better to go in blind. Uh…if there are no barbarians…what is this movie?
Finished it yesterday. I don’t even know how to comment without spoiling it.
Love director / writer Zach Cregger’s style. He makes things that should be cliche entertaining again.
Justin Long can still nail “scared shitless”.
Then we meet “the mother”, and that’s where my opinion changes. Not anyone’s fault, just my own personal preference. Creatures aren’t really my thing, and this storyline kind of felt like it was part of a different film. Also, even though mother is gross, I felt very sad for her.
So, while I would recommend this, I would include a caveat about the last third.
Did you at one point think mother was actually Keith, or related to Keith?
I’m different. The world is awash in entertainment options and my time is limited. If a movie can’t bother to describe itself in a way useful to me, I can’t bother to spend my time watching it.
It was not just some woman who was purely nuts, but a motherly woman who wanted a baby. I think her lowering baby bottles down for them to drink from is a highly memorable scene from movies this year. Was that lady someone the bad guy kidnapped before? If so, how did she end up staying down there wanting a baby? Was it because he got her pregnant and the baby did not survive and she became enraged? Was he also prisoner?
While I don’t agree that you need to be able to quickly describe the premise of a film, I think at least some mention should be made of the genre. I am glad I know what it is so that I can avoid this particular film. If I had gone into it blind I would not have been amused.
