Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (HBO). Saw it when it first came out, but had some time to kill and chose to watch it again and I think I enjoyed it even more this time. Just a cracking good adventure yarn and beautifully photographed.

It’s a shame that this didn’t launch a franchise, since this one story just barely scratched the surface of the Patrick O’Brien novels. Perhaps there’s an alternate universe where we get a 19th century Napoleonic naval adventure movie every year, but there was only one Spider-Man movie.

Why or why not? And do you think they’ll make another? (I hear the first didn’t exactly rule the box office). I enjoyed the movie very much, having read none of the books before. Since then, I’ve read “HMS Surprise” and also enjoyed it, but can’t say I’m dying to read the rest of the series. It just didn’t do that much for me.

Movie question: Master and Commander

I just finished watching “Master and Commander:the Far Side of the World” with Russell Crowe. I know this is a stupid question, and I know I’m missing something that will make me look foolish, but I just can’t figure out the ending of the movie. Why did Captain Aubrey turn the ship around to follow the one that had just left not long before? There was something about a sword given by the French doctor, only the doctor was said to have died. Will someone come along and explain what I am missi…

Master & Commander question:

At the end, how did Dr. Maturin know that the French doctor had been dead for months? Are we to assume that he’d just had conversations with the members of the other boat? For a movie that paid so much attention to detail, that line always seemed to hang out there like an albatross.

I just finished viewing M&C dvd from Netflix. I would like to rant that this was the 3rd “damaged” disc I’ve gotten out of 10 so far, I would often have to skip entire chapters of the movie due to it freezing. Netflix should do some sort of inventory quality control. Anywho, I have a question, when the French ship was defeated, the “doctor” handed over the commander’s sword.
