Moving to New Server Friday, January 19th @ 09:00 CST

So, am I here, or am I there? (I’m so confused…)

Hey! I figured it out all by myself! I’m here and there!

Here is there. Until the DNS information propagates through the DNS network, you’ll have to use the IP address–DNS is the system that resolves a URL to an IP address, because it’s easier for people to remember www.straightdope.com than 208.100.20.199. It should be golden by tomorrow, the day after, at most.

Stoopid edit feature. shakes fist at picunurse

Here is now there and vice a versa.
The new server is now the live SDMB and Jerry wiped the test environment. So far performance looks much improved and that is with some extra features on. Hooray.

Jim

I typically open a thread by right-click–>Open in New Window. A few minutes ago I started getting messages that a pop-up had been blocked every time I tried to open a new thread in this way. Now it’s working again.

Now again my browser is seeing right-click + Open in New Window as a pop-up, but only on SDMB.

My propogation is complete.

As I said in the test forum, thank you! There’s probably going to be some kinks to work out, and I know some of us might be whiny during that time, but please don’t think we aren’t grateful.

I refer the New Scientist to the experiences of Lucy 2.0.

On Day 110 of her wheelathon she achieved a personal best of 2.3868 km/h or, to put it another way, mach 0.0019483 over a period of 6 minutes 41 seconds.

This compares with the New Scientist’s speed assumption of 7.2 km/h (2 metres per second). Therefore, if we can regard Lucy 2.0 as a reliable benchmark, more than 360 hamsters would be required to light a 60-watt bulb rather than the 120 mentioned in the quoted article. Please note this figure assumes 360+ hamsters could operate at Lucy 2.0’s maximum speed during the whole of their working day. Frankly this assumption is unrealistic due to the unreliability of hamsters in general.

And yet, hope is at hand. On Day 130 of her project, Lucy 2.0 spent 10.02% of her time on the treadmill rather than the 5% estimated by the New Scientist. I don’t follow the calculation too well but, if you ask me, I’d rather believe Lucy 2.0’s handler than the New Scientist any day of the week. Anyway, bearing in mind Lucy 2.0’s work rate, the brigade of hamsters required to light one 60-watt bulb would be well in excess of 3,600 rather than the quoted 2,400.

Clearly, these revelations imply that the impact of any environmental and economic disasters referred to in the article would be multiplied by a factor of more than 1.5.

Resistance was futile. We have been assimilated.

Thanks to all who worked on this.

Regards,
Shodan

<obscure Star Trek Reference> We simply beamed them over to the Klingon ship. </ostr>

Hardly obscure… :stuck_out_tongue:
Can you pun Hamster, though? THAT’s the question…

Now I can again right click and open in a new window.

I’m just reporting, not kvetching.

Obscure? Obscure?

That is one of the most famous lines in Star Trek’s most famous episode.

speak. self. :(.
