I recently set up a new computer for someone. Everything is running great.
But I can’t seem to get Firefox to install properly. I’ve used this on other computers with no problems what so ever. It seems to install ok, but then it goes to open the start page with “looking up start.mozilla.org…” and just sits there. No Google page, nothing. It’s like its waiting for the page to open (time icon is present). But it just sits there forever and never opens. Any ideas as to why it’s doing this?
Assuming IE was part of the O/S install, try IE. If the same problem occurs then you don’t have an Internet connection.
Internet Explorer works fine. We have a internet connection (Road Runner). But Firefox is desired because of spyware & po ups. I use it on my computer at home and at work. I’ve never had a problem getting to the start page like this. The program is loaded on the system. It just won’t open the start page.
Can you go to ANY other pages with Firefox? Or does it only fail start.mozilla.org?
Is there a firewall on the computer that might need to be configured to allow Firefox to access the network?
Just to be clear, I think the suggestion to open IE was solely to confirm that there was indeed an internet connection. Mozilla displays the behavior you describe for me, for instance, when my connection goes down (for whatever reason). I don’t think it was in any way a suggestion to go back to using IE.
Oh, I knew what you ment. It wouldn’t do any good to try this without verifying an internet connection. But we have one, which is why I’m baffled about whats happening.
:smack: Doh! That was it! Case closed! Firewall was re-configured, Firfox opened!
What a dope, huh? My brain must be taking the weekend off.
But to be fair to myself, my own computers have firewalls and this didn’t happen, though they don’t have the same kind of firewall this unit has. Also, I got no alert notice or anything when installing. That’s odd. The firewall popped up an alert for everything else we installed.
Anyway, thanks for the quick responses guys. I appreciate it.
Glad to be of help!
Just out of curiosity, what firewall is it? Weird that it didn’t alert you on Firefox, especially since it alerted you for other stuff.
Norton. It seems pretty good but I’m baffled why it didn’t warn about this.
My computer at home uses the firewall from Road Runner. My computer at work uses Mcaffee. Both of them popped up alerts but allowed for install anyway.
Had anybody tried to install Firefox on the machine before? Perhaps it did pop up an alert for it during the previous install, but the user accidently pressed the “deny access” option instead of allow.
I don’t think so. I was present when they rmoved the CPU out of the box, brand new.
'Course, who knows what those guys at Best Buy do in their spare time!
