It’s always a Day full of Fools for somebody somewhere.
Thank you, thank you.
it’s always been “Mop-Sims” to me.
As another (relative) newcomer to this board, I heartily agree.
Isn’t that a Transformer- Mumpsimus Prime?
Maybe we need a new forum for truly pointless items that are meaningless and have absolutely no redeeming intellectual, social, or jocular value, aren’t worth the pixels used to post them and should ignored and immediately forgotten?
Never mind.
Nice move - it was always jarring to see things like a 9/11 thread in a forum named mundane and pointless.
I do like this one better, but either way is fine.
Thanks for consulting me. Oh, and everyone else too, I guess. Sure, go ahead, I approve. I have a rubber stamp around here somewhere, in case that’s required.
Once a mod explained one of my writings was moved into the “mundane” section and I felt so . . . you know . . . mundane. Now I will be feeling much, much better.
Thank you.
Cincinnatus mumpsimus sounds like a very interesting breed of … I’m not quite sure what sort of critter.
Maybe one of these things:
Whatever it is, when you see one crawling across the back of your hand, run in circles and scream like a 6yo girl. That’ll show it who’s boss.
I am seriously outraged that they didn’t use my perfect suggestion:
Just kidding, this is a great change, and about time!
I also could have gone with “Hey! I’m Talkin’ Here!”
I think the “and” is inclusive. It’s a forum for both. Just as we have Politics and Elections, even though most threads are about politics but not elections.
It shouldn’t imply that all topics are both miscellaneous and personal.
I appreciate the name change of GQ as a reflection of tightening the ship, so to speak.
But I do keep wondering about naming a forum “Eff-cue”
Or maybe much, much more miscellaneous?
And for the record it’s MipsEmEss
As for this name: a good compromise keeping the reactionaries old timers happy while also reflecting a more miscellaneous era.
I agree it shouldn’t imply all topics are both, and that is exactly why the conjunction should be “or”’ (the union) instead of “and” (the intersection). I’m too lazy to draw a Venn diagram.
It depends on whether the name is describing the scope of the category (miscellaneous and personal) or describing the posts in it (miscellaneous or personal).
Given that P&E described the scope, it seems consistent for this to do so, as well.
Is it still okay to use the subforum to share stuff that actually is mundane and pointless? I mean, if it must be shared, we do need a place to share it.
But what about the ones that are both? “Or” appears to exclude those.
I’m fine with the “and”. In language, as opposed to in mathematics, it can be taken to mean either “topics that are both miscellaneous and personal” or “topics that are miscellaneous, and also topics that are personal”. That ambiguity of language works here to allow a relatively short phrasing to cover both categories.
I would presume that “mundane and pointless” would be one of the many types of things that can reasonably be considered “miscellaneous”.
“Miscellaneous and/or Pointless”?
