Mr. Show

I know it has a cult following, and I’m sure there are some other fanatics aprowl on the SDMB.

Two questions:

  1. Has anyone else noticed how weak Season 4 is in comparison to the former ones? Shorter episodes, more drawn-out sketches… were the writers changed for those episodes, or what?
  2. Has there been any talk of a series-spanning boxed set?

Thanks.

Pop a wheelie, it’s Bob and David!

Season 4 is kind of a bastard season. HBO wasn’t really supporting them that much, Tom Kenny was basically gone and I think Bob and David had just gotten tired of dealing with the HBO brass. Add in the fact that they were starting to work on “Run, Ronnie, Run” and it was just a big mess.

The first half of Season 4 is close to Seasons 2 and 3 in quality, but it goes downhill fast.

Now, I gotta ask:

“Can I get change for a dollar? Quarters, mostly?”

Hmm. Hm, hm, hm , hm, hm, hm. Quarters. Tsk, tsk, tsk tsk tsk. Nyuh. Nyuh nyuh nyuh nyuh.

I’m gonna have to call the regional office.

Have you ever seen the book “The Tenacity of the Cockroach?” It’s a collection of tons of the Onion’s best interviews from their AV section. They have 5 interviews with Bob and David spanning the show’s creation and demise.

I’m rereading the interviews-- I haven’t read the book since before I found Mr. Show. By September '98, the pace and expenses were rising, Bob’s wife was pregnant, and both Bob and David were frustrated with their low exposure. Interestingly, David mentions ‘Operation Hell on Earth’ as his least favorite episode. However, there’s no mention of the show ending.

In '99, David says in an interview that Bob was really willing to carry on, but he felt the show had aged him. He mentions ‘Run, Ronnie, Run!’ optimistically, but the rest is history. :frowning:

Thanks.

Mr. Show was never 100%. Let’s face it: If you’re going to write a comedy sketch, there’s going to be some rat feces in there.

Maybe, but it came damn close. The “lost episode” was near-perfect, one of my favorite episodes of any television series of any kind, ever.

I’m also partial to “Monster Parties: Fact or Fiction?”, but I can’t remember what season that was in.

Who wants a banana?

Four. Way to disprove my point, Sol.

Anyway, the show didn’t run for long, but there are still too many references going unmade. Take it from me, I love you!

It’s like I’m saying, we’ve been influenced by all kinda white performers who have been influenced by black performers.

damn, I totally forgot about Monster Parties, my favorites were Hitler Clones & of course the lost Sid & Marty Krofft show L.
Whoever did Professor Ellis D. Trails totally had Charles Nelson Reilly down!

I would make more references, but…

I have…ENTITILITUS!

Unless the Imminent Death Syndrome gets me first, that is.

Now put your little poo box away.

  • Cockring Emporium

  • “Blowjobs!”

  • Telethon for the laziest boy alive

  • Rock Band’s “hot tub” video!

I have season 1 on DVD already. I don’t know if the others are available…

but let me just say this:

WHAT IS UP SATAN’S ASS???

It’s mutual, citrus: My shoes are tight!

I assume by references, though you’re talking about some television program. I’d like to help out, but I didn’t see that series on television because I don’t own a television. Notice that I say “television” instead of “T.V.” because “T.V.” is a nickname, and nicknames are for friends, and television, sir, is no friend of mine!

Ah, who am I kidding? I can make references. 'Cuz I’m strong, like The Hulk! Arrrggh!

And in honor of Bob, I’m writing this post naked.

“Any cock’ll dooooooo!”

That would be Tom Kenny, who’s also the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, as well as the Mayor and the narrator on “The Powerpuff Girls.” He rocks old-school, yo.

Also: does anybody remember the bit Bob and David did with the prop comic who had “the magazine bit?” Was that on “Mr. Show” or one of their stand-up routines? “So I was in Aspen walking down the street when I saw these People. I said, ‘Hey, do you have the Time?’ They said, ‘Who, Us?’ I said, ‘Yeah, all Seventeen of you Cum-sucking Whores!’”

That was from The US Comedy Festival in Aspen. It’s the same bit where you find out that the US Hecklers convention is also in Aspen at the same time.

As to the OP, I think you are way off base. Season 4 is by far my favorite.

Scams And Flams
Wykyd Scepter (Rock Band’s “hot tub” video!)
Racist in the Year 3000
Phone Sex Bet (Geez, Thor, don’t you take a break?)
Supermarket Ads
The Story of Everest
Taint
God’s Book on Tape
Rich Guy Negative Ads
Civil War Re-Enactments
Teardrop Awards

Although I must admit, my favorite all time Mr. Show sketch is ‘Blowing up the Moon’ from season 3.

I’m gonna miss you, Willips Brighton’s Son. Pour me another space beer, Gleep-Glop!

Pash

This show is classic.

But remember, TV is a nickname, nicknames are for friends, and television is NO friend of mine.

I’m not sure if this show was more popular among young people, or companions.

Like I said, this show is core.

The young people/companions sketch.

Oh, my lord.

And anyone with enough sophistication to visit this thread NEEDS the DVDs. I’ve even listened to all the directors’ commentaries twice, they’re hilarious.

You people really need to buy the DVDs. I mean, listen lady, I don’t come to where YOU work and slap the dick out of your mouth!

I’m wetter than I’ve ever been, and I’m from Canada! Coupon: The Movie was the best sketch they ever had, frankly.

So don’t tell me I’m fat!!

I saw the shit out of it!

“Elevators, elevators! Riding 'em up and dowwwwn!”

That is all.

I saw Mr. Show live at the Orpheum in boston! woo hoo! they were fantastic…my friend got at Titanica shirt, too

“He looks like a wet cigar!”

anyhow, I do beleive you can get all four seasons on DVD now, though I don’t know if they all come together in one boxed set yet
