“Woo! Packers!”
i just saw that one for the first time Sunday. I now hate sandstorms.
You mean purchase the old episodes? Yes you can. Just a friendly heads up.
Sci Fi doesn’t have the rights to show the episodes that were shown on Comedy Central. Mike came on the show a season or two before they switched over to SciFi.
Plenty of Joel episodes (including Mitchell, his going away show) are available on tape and DVD.
Sci-fi only airs episodes with Mike because they were only involved in the show’s last three seasons. Before that the show was put out by Comedy Central/Comedy Channel, which is where Joel hosted for the first five years. As I understand it, he left the show amicably to pursue other interests, and did come back to do a guest appearance on the Soultaker episode for Sci-fi, so evidently there was no bad blood there.
I believe the reason that C.C. never airs these older episodes has something to do with licensing of the original movies for use by Best Brains, the company that actually produced the show. Apparently the film rights were only secured for a limited time (two years, I think). After that time, the only shows that could be rebroadcast or redistributed were those in which the movie rights had been renewed. This is why Rhino Video, which distributes the show on tape/DVD, has such a patchy selection, and also why you’ll never see those earlier shows broadcast in their original order again.
None of which I knew when I was slogging down to the Student Union to watch the damn show in the basement with the rest of the gang, of course. Never taped a single frigging show; it was so damn funny, I thought it would be in syndication forever. Oh well.
Hmm. I thought he was head writer and took over as main character when Joel left.
He was head writer and also appeared occasionally as different aliens.
Yeah, he was a writer from day one, or just about, anyway.
Wow! alright. Thanks to slortar, js_africanus, fiddlesticks, and terrifel for the info. I am gonna rush right down to the video store and see what they got! also gonna check out that usenet thingy.
I suggest you get the new MST3K DVD box set. I got it and it’s awesome–Catalina Caper, The Skydivers, The Creeping Terror, and Bloodhunt. Now if only Rhino Home Video would pick up the pace and get more DVDs out!
Wow, color me stupid. Only looks like 30 or so are out, though.
Hey - does anyone know if there are plans for Rhino to release more episodes than what’s already out? Or is it one of those “what you see is what you get” situations.
And, because one can never have too many quotes:
Re: Dweeby high school kid in the “What to Do on a Date” short -
“Betcha he wishes he had a life. Man, what a loser.”
"TortCHA!"
“Eagle One, how do you copy?”
**“With a Xerox machine, how do you do it?”
“BO-ring IN-cid-DEN-tal MU-sic!”
“Look, it’s the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie!”**
Visit the Digital Archive Project to download episodes. It’s all free, just read the faqs to find out how. Or if you already know something about IRC, come visit on server irc.dapcentral.org, port 6667, channel #dapcentral
Which was the episode where they said “Finally, the [something or other], twelve hours in.”
All of the episodes that have already been released on VHS will eventually be rereleased on DVD. They’re putting out a few new DVDs every few months.
They are also still releasing the occasional new episode on VHS, but they will never release all the episodes, because they don’t have the rights to all of the movies. And some of the people who DO own the rights have publicly stated that they will never allow the MST3K versions to be released.
I believe that was Hobgoblins. “Finally, the hobgoblins…”
Gotta love the interview with “director Rick Sloan” during the closing credits. “Yes, I had been doing quite a bit of crack that day, as I recall…”
Yeah, that’s the one.
I’m looking for a specific episode that has something to do with a werewolf. All I remember from it is that one of the robots start singing
“Where The Streets Have No Name”. My friend loves U2, and I think she would find it hilarious. I’m new, btw.
::waves hello::
I started watching during Season 8-9, so I really do like the newer ones AND the older ones. I think they’re all just as funny, because the themes of the show are still there. (Plus, I just love Brain Guy!)
