I am looking for an online trivia game somewhat like IRC trivia. Very simple - server/bot asks a question, first person to type the answer wins some points and the respect of his or her peers. You can chat about the questions and answers too.
Every so often over the last few years I have tried to find something browser based but there is nothing as good as old IRC trivia. I don’t mind IRC but I am sure there must be something better these days.
I don’t have much to contribute, but as a longtime player I’d be interested to hear of any good alternatives.
I tried out Trivia Mania for a little while, but found the games to be slow and poorly-constructed. You can play for real money, but not very much of it. I get the feeling that the site won’t be around for long.
Where do you play on IRC? My most recent haunt was #londontrivia on Undernet, but the weird Christian emphasis of the bot’s messages kind of put me off.
Ah, that brings back memories. Long ago I hung out on IRC, and wrote a trivia bot myself. Except mine didn’t host the games, it played them. Under the rules my group played under, the winner for each question was whoever got the right answer first, no matter how many guesses it took. So my bot was programmed to recognize particular categories of questions that had small numbers of likely potential answers (multiple choice, true/false, yes/no, “What color…?”, “What country…?”, etc.), and would then give all such answers.
Really, it was just doing the same thing a lot of the humans were. One time, the question was “What color do most people name when asked to quickly name a color?”, and there were three "red"s on the board and starting on the "orange"s and "yellow"s before any of us finished reading the question.
