Sometimes when I log in, it takes me back to the login page. When I log in the second time everything is fine. It doesn’t do this every time, just once in a while. It’s only been doing this for about a month or month and a half.
Just now I logged in, redirected back to the login page, logged in again, and was redirected yet again to the login page. I clicked a link to another forum instead of logging in for the 3rd time. At that point I noticed that I was logged in already (got the “Welcome, Apocalypso” message in the upper right corner.
So, glitch in the board software, or something more sinister?
I’ve been complaining about exactly this on-and-off for about two years now, and a few other posters have occasionally mentioned it too I think.
The answer is always the same: Delete your cookies. Check your browser settings. Or maybe don’t delete your cookies. Update your browser. Blah Blah Blah. It doesn’t really seem to matter what I do or don’t do with my cookies, or what browser or operating system I’m using – I’ve tried a few.
Other unrelated threads in ATMB have complained about the board responding really slowly, or occasional other problems. I think I’ve noticed that these log-in failures seem to increase at about the same times that other users are complaining about some other problems.
About a year ago (or two years?) Jerry took the whole board down for a few days and re-built a whole lot of stuff in the database. (The indexes?) That made a big improvement and a whole bunch of complaints went way down for quite a while after that. Maybe it’s time to do that again.
In that case, I understand what is happening and agree with your remedy. The board, when busy, is dropping less important requests. Someone logging in isn’t all that important in the grand scheme (unlike, say, dropping posts), since they can just log in again if it fails.
And reindexing is something that another board told me you need to do about once a week or so. They say the board will slow down and get glitchy if you don’t do that. That may be a bit overkill, but regular reindexing does seem like a good idea.
