There is also the possibility that a conviction on the murder could be set aside on appeal, which is exactly what has happened in this case.

Not to worry about him getting off scot-free; he’s currently serving many-year sentences for financial crime convictions. Given his age, he’ll die in prison.

So yeah, there is good reason to go after someone like this for as many different charges as you can. You can never tell if, say, a corrupt Clerk of Court will screw up the other ones.
