I was inspired to post this by the latest Foo Fighters video. Every time I see them, I think, “Wow, what a great song. That Dave Grohl is a talented guy. I should really pick up an album and check them out.” I think I have liked every song they’ve released. I like his work with The Queens of the Stone Age.
Do I own a Foo Fighters recording? Nope. Never bought one, never been given one.
So, what’s your story? Which band is ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ for you?
There are a host of “classic rock” bands that fall into this category, because the retro, AOR radio stations I tend to listen to play most of their songs over and over. There’s no reason I should own any CDs by the Who or the Rolling Stones (not that their among my all-time favorites), because almost all their good songs are in heavy rotation on classic rock radio.
As much as I like Led Zeppelin, I never bough their famed fourth album, for that very reason! If I listen to a classic rock station for a week, the odds are good I’ll hear every song on that album five times!
The Smiths. I even had started a thread asking which CD to start with. I plan to change that sad, pitiful fact this weekend, though.
The same thing’s happened with me and Dave Grohl as in the OP. I like the Foo Fighters alot, so it makes sense that by now I would have something by them. I don’t. I went in a record store with the intention to buy the QOTSA CD just to get something else. (I don’t own a Nirvana CD either, but because I’ve met too met way too many people who worship Kurt Cobain and buying their stuff seems like only helping fuel that legacy.)
Don’t own anything by Bob Marley or the Beatles. I like them, though.
Oddly, the FooFighters as well. I do have the QotSA CD, Songs for the Deaf, though.
Until recently, I didn’t have any Elvis Costello. I also got my first Nirvana CD about two weeks ago.
I think the most glaring vacancy in my CD collection is TMBG. I love them, but for some reason I never get quite as far as buying their stuff. I guess I’m torn between buying the individual albums or just the compilation.
I also haven’t bought any Primus, though I come close often enough.
Lots of Euro music that isn’t available here. Fortunately I spend time in Canada during the summers so I am able to pick up some good music there. Ministry of Sound albums top my list of wanted music.
