Anyhow, it just seems debasing to MEN, as well as women, to insinuate that men are so helplessly at the mercy of a finely shaped ankle. It’s just not in line with what I know of men.

It seems odd that Sheik al-Hilali would make such an intemperate remark. Usually he can be relied on for calls for a Jihad against Israel or, a recent favourite, claims that Australia is a Muslim nation because it was originally settled by Afghans. The aboriginals are their descendents.

A spokesman for the Islamic Council of Queensland, Abdul Jamal, said he should be charged for making inciting comments against women. The Islamic Council of Victoria has already called for the sheikh to be sacked as Mufti of Australia, and the position abolished.

Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilaly has sparked outrage, after he likened scantily clad women to meat, and blamed them for inciting sexual assault.

He has been invited to Brisbane’s Eid Festival next week.

But Islamic Council president Abdul Jalal says the cleric has set back relations between the Muslim and wider communities and should stay in Sydney.

“I feel … the Mufti has to be put in his place,” he said.

“And it would be good from the organisers’ point of view to say, ‘look you have done this and sorry you are not on the program and you are not coming to Queensland’.”

Sheikh’s festival invitation in doubt

The Queensland Peter Beattie says the Sheikh’s visit to Queensland would be counter-productive and divisive.

“The comments made are not those reflected those by the Muslim community in this state,” he said.

"The Muslim community in this state are very good citizens.

“I don’t believe they would have that view. I would hope that they would withdraw his invitation as a sign of their commitment to the rights of women.”

Mr Jalal says action should be taken against the Sheikh.

“If anyone could have attacked Islam in the way he has attacked all others - if there is cause to take him to court then why shouldn’t they?” he said.

I live less than a mile from that mosque. I have Muslim friends, and they will not be happy with al-Hilali. He’s a nutjob.

I have a theory that Muslims are a little behind Christians in their rejection of religion but people like Sheik al-Hilali are hurrying things along. I know several university educated Muslims who don’t have any sense of “not fitting in” with western society. I have heard several times that these people don’t go to services any more because they are all run by “old people” who believe that they are victims and that the west is evil.

Most of these people would rate as pretty poor Muslims. They drink and eat the wrong things but I take their disdain for their elders as a promising sign.

Seriously though, WTF? I’m so glad to hear that he is being condemned by more level headed members of the Muslim community. It makes me feel slightly better about humanity in general.

Sounds to me like it’s the fault of the cats.

See, that’s what I don’t get about this. If the temptation of the female form is so dire in men that it is necessary for the stability of society to hide the women away, doesn’t that mean that the men are weak?

I’ve been to nudist (or naturist or whatever they’re calling them these days) events, and, let me tell you, the temptations of the flesh are a lot less when you can actually see what most people look like. You get used to it in about ten minutes.

The people you are actually tempted by, you would be tempted by no matter what they wear.

However, in nudist contexts, male interest is evident in a very immediate physical sense, which is usually so embarrassing that it goes away quickly.
