Raped woman sentenced to 90 lashes.

Link.

So long as Islamic law says such things, consider me to be a sworn enemy of Islam. Words cannot describe the feelings such…barbarism engenders in me.

And it was Iraq we kicked the shit out of?

Just curious, but if it came out that the Catholic Church was still covering for pedophiles in its ranks, would you become the sworn enemy of all Christiandom?

Why yes, yes I am.

What do you mean if it came out?

Ditto on that.

I’m no mathematician or anything, but how many days does it take to get to 90 at 50/day?

1.8 days.

I think that’s a comment on lashings in general and not on this specific case which is why the wording might sound a little strange.

Still covering, people. Still covering. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard any new stories about abuse being covered up, and I was trying to avoid anyone saying, “Well, they don’t do it any more, so that’s different.”

Good to know that Saudi Arabia is one of our allies in the fight against extremism.

Honestly, when I hear stuff like this, I feel like those people over there aren’t even human.

Interesting that the story has been lifted practically verbatim from the original article in The Scotsman, except “Islamic law” or “Islamic-based law” has been added in a couple of places.

Strange that Fox saw the need to emphasize the provenance of the outrageous verdict. I doubt any other legal systems in Saudi Arabia would have been as viciously unpleasant.

Well, they wouldn’t be covering very well if you did, now would they?

The difference, as far as I can see, is that the Catholic Church’s position on priests having sxe with altar boys is that it’s wrong, and a sin, and that helping them to do so is also a sin. So when the catholics do it, they are failing to live up to the requirements of their faith. The linked story has people who are doing as their faith directs. It is fortunate that most Muslims don’t agree with them.

I hear stories all the time. I don’t know what you consider “a long time”. A week?

That’s rather a meaningless distinction to make. Extremist nut-jobs can find some tortured reasoning for whatever they do. If they’re being assholes, who cares whether they think their poor behavior is backed up by their holy book?

If you need an analagous example that badly, how about Christian fundies who let their children die because they refuse to seek medical attention. They’re “doing as their faith directs”. So does that make silenus a sworn enema of Christianity?

Yeah, it’s a good thing our government has never treated people cruelly.

This actually isn’t particularly relevant to the OP. The punishment of rape victims living under Islamic law is happening in accordance with that law, and by their philosophy, in accordance with the principles of that religion. However odious the situation in the Catholic Church, it is not in accordance with any Church law or teaching.

Words fail me. The rape victim and the guy she was with both get whipped for being alone in a car together, and the rapists get 10 months to 5 years.

It shocks me every time I realize that such barbarism exists in the 21st century, especially in a country like Saudi Arabia that has so many of the trappings of civilization.

The Catholic Church is one faith. Christianity is dozens of faiths, one of which is Catholicism. So that would make him the sworn enemy of whatever faith it was that directed those people to do that.

Man, but even when our guys do it there’s some sort of twisted monkey-logic at work. When I hear stuff like “11-year-old girl beheaded because her mother was raped by burglars” I just feel like I’m reading about life on mars or something.
