My brand new computer won't work. What am I missing here?

I returned from Best Buy with a new Gateway GM5664 desktop computer, and I am having a terrible time getting it to work. The computer turns “on,” in that I hit the power button and the fan turns on, and buttons light up on the tower. Also, the wireless mouse and keyboard are responsive.

My problem is the monitor is getting no signal. I checked all of my connections and everything seems to be in order. I plugged a monitor from an old computer into the new one, and it was unresponsive as well. Additionally, I plugged my new monitor into my old computer and it worked fine, so the problem is with the computer itself.

It is straight out of the box, and I’m baffled as to why it’s not working. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

Is it using the integrated display adapter (on the motherboard) or is there a display adapter in one of the slots?

It is connected through the integrated video (VGA) port, which is blue.

I had just this issue 3 weeks ago. On the back of the PC, is the vga connection covered with a plastic cap and a notice about not using this connection? If so, like me you ignored the message and connected your monitor there. After re-checking, you will find another VGA connector lower down and when you connect the monitor there, everything will work fine. And if you are like me, you will smack yourself in the forehead, and be thankful you didn’t call tech support yet.

Yes! The problem here was, there wasn’t another blue VGA port. There was just another DVI port lower down. However, there was a DVI adapter included in the boxes upon boxes packaged with the computer. I connected it to the lower DVI port with the adapter, and voila! Thanks for the insight.

And yes, I was going to rush into Best Buy tomorrow morning and see what was up. Thanks for saving me the time (and embarassment).

Glad to help. My Gateway has VGA and DVI on the graphics card. No DVI adapter, though. No DVI cable, either (grrrrr!).
