Of all video games and computer games, my brother David usually only likes games like Mario or Croc–simple obstacle-course-type games.
But he loved Homeworld. He said, without a hint of irony, that he felt a little empty inside when he finally finished it. He loved it.
So I’m asking, what other games might he like? And yes, I do know that there are two Homeworld sequels. I’m asking about games outside of the Homeworld series.
It depends on WHY he liked it, unfortunately. If he liked it for the gameplay, it’s not too hard to suggest some RTS or RTS-like titles that might scratch that itch.
If he liked it for the STORY, he’s pretty much SOL.
Maybe Star Wolves would work, it’s about a mercenary company flying around in heavily armed spaceships and taking on missions. It’s actually not half bad, looks alright and the gameplay is a bit like the Mech Commander games but in three dimensions. Better make sure you get the first game though, from what I hear the sequels are pretty buggy.
On the Amazon page for Homeworld, there’s a section titled “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought” and then a listing of what might be similar style games you can check out. Some of them look pretty cool and have high ratings.
He may want to try Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, for similar gameplay - though it’s more on ship level than at a fleet level. However, Homeworld’s style of telling the story is rather unique. It kinds of me remind me of Dune.
Because there really isn’t anything comparable in terms of storytelling out there. Homeworld 2 definitely does not do a good job following in the footsteps of the first one in this regard. It’s kinda disjointed and doesn’t really accomplish the same sorts of things, and there aren’t many other games that have that sort of style.
That said, there are lots of games with excellent stories out there, so maybe he should broaden his horizons a bit.
